When you first wake up from RNY...Is the pain that horrible?

I'm sort of a baby when it comes to pain, but will tell you it's not that bad.  Yes, it is painful, but it's not excruciating.  For me, it was more of a deep soreness type of pain rather than a torturing, "oh this is killing me type of pain."

In all seriousness, don't focus on the pain aspects because it just doesn't last that long.

I honestly had no pain except for the defective hospital bed that I was in. I wanted to get up and walk but they wouldn't let me until the doctor came by for a visit. As soon as the doctor said ok, I was up and moving. I must admit that I have a high tolerlance for pain which I discovered after I had my c-section (no pain then either).

Just press the button for pain if you need.

Good luck!

I have kidney stones, 2 births, a hysterectomy as well... this is manageable. My stones are the most excruciating. I had a pain pump with morphine attached when I woke up and i pushed it every 10 or so minutes as well.
Babygirl got her surgery March 3rd...     She's from 339 to 200 as of 6/14/2012.. SOO proud of my bigbabygirl

For me, the pain was excruciating for about 30 mins...the post-op nurse kept telling me I had to wait for the pain medication to kick in, which took forever!  I've never had any kind of surgery before, so I wasn't prepared for that kind of pain.  However, I would do it again!  I just wish I had psychologically prepared myself better for the pain.

I think it just depends on the surgeon, how well the surgery went, and the individual.  I woke up in recovery in pain...they gave me pain meds, which didn't really help because it was gas pain.  Gas pain will be in your stomach, but also in your shoulders!

My sister was able to regulate her own pain meds, pressing a button every 2 hours to deliver them.  I had to ask for mine, but the nurses were there every few hours to take vitals, so it was easy to ask:)

My advice, get on your right side to lay if the pain gets bad, it helped me out a lot.
Don't wait to be given pain meds, ring the bell and ask for them if you need them.
Also, WALK WALK WALK!!!!  They should be getting you out of bed that evening or the next day to walk the halls to work the gas out of you.  The more you walk, the better you will feel!
I didn't need pain meds on my second day.

I think the biggest non pain related advice ppl will give you...BRING LIP BALM AND A TOOTHBRUSH!  You can't have water until 24 hours after surgery...so your mouth will be dry.  Lip balm saved my life!

Good luck to you!

I had lap RNY and would describe my pain as minimal. There was some discomfort...from both the incisions and the gas, but on a scale of 1-10 it was only about a 4 or 5 at worst. I found the whole thing fairly easy overall. (I also had several surgeries to compare to)  I took pain meds in the hospital but easily transitioned off of them at home. My biggest "issue" was being very exhausted by simple things for a short while once I got home.

You will be just fine! It is WELL worth the discomfort.

I am 6 days post op, and BY FAR this was the easiest and pain free experience for me.  I have had 2 C sections, and surgery on my tailbone, and 4 large tattoos.

I woke up in recovery, and the nurse immediately handed me my pain pump button that I could push every 6 minutes, and I did.  When the light turned green,  I pushed it.  I never felt much pain, it was more like muscle aches from doing 1000 sit ups.  The worst part for me was I had a horrible sore throat from the tube during surgery.  When I woke up, my throat was sore and mouth was so dry.  I couldn't have anything until 6 am the next morning, not even a sip of water.  I was able to rinse out my mouth with water and gargle with warm sal****er and that helped immensely.  I was up and walking 4 hours after surgery, and continued to walk every few hours.  Honestly that helps ALOT.

About day 2 I had some gas pain that walking helped,  but nothing unbearable.

By day 4 at home I was off pain meds and just taking regular tylenol as needed.

Everyone has a different pain threshold... so your experience will be your own.

Good luck!

I've had a c-section, hysterectomy and gallbladder removal.  ALL of these were worse than my RNY.  The first pain I felt after this surgery was when I got out of bed to walk the first time.  I felt so good I got up quickly and felt a sharp pain on the left side.

Wanted to add I also had to lap female surgeries and the gas pain from those were even worse than my RNY.  I spent one night in the hospital and took pain meds the first night home only.  I did have a pain pump I used that first night when I'd wake up I'd pu****

Not gonna lie - it DOES hurt. But you'll be fine. I was so excited to just be done with the whole thing that I could hardly lay still. As soon as they would let me, I got up and walked and that helped bunches.

Don't sweat it. They'll give you lots of pain med, make sure to push your pain button ALL the time, don't let the med wear off the first few hours and you'll do great. You'll be home before you know it (which always makes things better) and the pain is not unbearable or even close.

Also, some people have a lot less pain than others, the younger you are the less pain you'll have. Try not to worry so much. You'll do just fine.=)

RNY on 04/10/12 with
I did not feel any pain inside, the pain was at the incisions. I thought the insides, stomach and such, would hurt but that's not the case. Three days after the surgery I no longer needed any pain meds. It was very easy for me. The guy that had surgery the same day as me also no longer needed pain meds on the third day. There was a woman who had surgery the day after us and she constantly whined about her stitches hurting but not about anything else hurting. Don't worry too much about it. The thirst and dry mouth and throat was what bothered me, not the pain. I have tattooed lip color and eyeliner on my eyes and it hurt infinitely more than anything RNY related! Not a big deal. I wish you lots of luck, don't stress out.
