When you first wake up from RNY...Is the pain that horrible?
Amy......... I understand what you are saying I also have a dog I dont want to leave am orphen. And I thought the same what if I dont wake up? All we can do is pray for god to watch over us and keep us safe. The pain doesnt worry me as much as anything else. I know it will hepl me with my health,
its just a big step. Anyway Im sure you will do fine I know the unexpected scares us but just think positive and you will do fine.

It's different for everyone. My surgery was open and was surprisingly the easiest surgery I've had. The pain was manageable and by the time I got home, I didn't take any pain meds, not even tylenol. Walking really does help. It's the last thing you will feel like doing but it helps with the pain and recovery so much.
I was in so much pain when I first woke up from the anesthesia that I was convinced something had gone wrong and they had to do open surgery. For about the first 15 or 20 minutes the pain was excruciating. But eventually I got comfortable. For the next 18 hours I was on the morphine pump every 8 minutes.
Day 2 I was out of the hospital and the ride home (~30 minutes) was unpleasant, to say the least. Lots of pain in my belly from the gas. And that was despite me walking only hours after surgery and walking about 5 or 6 times before I was released from the hospital.
By far day 2 pain was the worst of the whole experience. And that's when I was reduced to liquid Lortab, which didn't do a thing for me. The only thing I've ever had that has been more painful is kidney stones.
The difference between day 2 and day 3 was like night and day. By day 3 I was moving around fine, walking straight. I think I walked 1/2 mile on day 3. I only needed the Lortab at night on the third night. By the fourth day, I was off pain meds altogether.
You'll do fine. The reward is worth the pain, I assure you.

When I first work up I had more distress and disorientation than pain. It was very confusing, I didn't know where I was, and didn't understand I just had surgery.
The pain I felt was mostly in my throat (from the breathing tubes) and in my back (from the gas they used for my lap). I don't specifically remember if I had pain from the incisions or surgery itself, so it was less attention getting than the other discomfort.
The very worst parts were the disorientation and the thirst. All I wanted in the world was a very long tall drink of water, and the ice chips just did not cut it because I had to wait 15 mins between 15 mls of them. SO VERY DRY.

It was the worst pain of my life (I've had 3 c/s)!! For me...everytime I'd take a breath and my diaphram would push on my stomach - it hurt!! It hurt to breath!!
I felt like I wa**** by a bus...over and over and over again!! My pain might have been due to the fact that they had to staple me 3x's before they closed me up (something about being able to see bubbles when they checked to make sure I was closed up).
For me....the pain didn't become toleralble...until the end of day 2 (I stayed in the hospital mon-thurs)....and that was with every pain med available to me!!

I remember waking up in recovery complaining about pain, but I'm not really sure I was in that much pain. I think it was just the shock of waking up...or else almost a week post-op, I can't remember being in that much pain, so it couldn't have been that bad.
The worse pain of this whole thing - gas pains on post op day 2/3, and back pain from being in an uncomfortable bed in the hospital.
I'm a big freaking baby, and this has not be excrutiating. I'd say uncomfortable, at sometimes mildly painful, but I was expecting much worse.

The first day was pretty uncomfortable for me, but I think the highest I went on the pain scale when they asked me was a 7. Meds fixed that. I was barely conscious the whole first day, so it's a blur. I felt WAY better the 2nd day. Just soreness around the incisions and gas pain. Walk walk walk!
Like everyone else said, keep up with your pain meds and you'll do fine. I didn't get a pump, I had to ask for pain meds as needed. Don't be afraid to ask!
The worst part of the surgery for me was not being able to drink anything that first day! I was so parched it was excruciating! They gave me a sponge on a stick that I could dip in ice water and wet my tongue and gums. It was heaven.
It is a scary thing. I have two very small children and I was terrified that I was going to die and leave them without a Mommy. It's perfectly normal to think that way. Heck, I took out a bigger life insurance policy before my surgery *just in case*.
Good luck!

I've had a lap gallbladder, open hysterectomy and RNY and the RNY was the worst of the three. I think in my case though, I had an extra incision because the Dr. had to take care of some adhesions, plus I constantly coughed hard for about the first 5 hours after getting out of surgery. All that coughing HURT like hell and really strained everything in my stomach. Took forever for it to go away, went thru 2 bottles of liquid lortab at home. I should add, though, that painkillers helped tremendously, it's not like I was laying around suffering with horrible pain..if it got to bad, I asked the nurses for more painkillers and I felt better. Still walked walked walked all the time.
Ask for all the painkillers you need, they will help!!!!!
