When you first wake up from RNY...Is the pain that horrible?
Hell yes it hurt. They just punched 6 holes in me and cut up my inards. But as soon as I started comming around and moaning the drugs were right there so total pain time was oh about 45 seconds.
I think the dumbest conversation I have ever had was in the poast op bed.
Me : MOAN!!!
Nurse: Does it hurt?
Me: Yes
Nurse: would you like some pain meds?
Me: F Yes.

Looks like everyone is very different...I had no pain (would describe it as mild discomfort if anything). I took the pain meds while I was in hospital (every 4 hours) and nothing once I got out. I was walking within 2 hours of surgery and back at work within two weeks.
The only other surgery I've had was a breast reduction back when I was 17 (25 years ago!) which was also not at all painful...I wouldn't even have called it mild discomfort...just very itchy.
Hope everything goes as smoothly for you!

I had my surgery open and I was in extreme pain they said I was screaming and crying i guess they drugged me up pretty good b/c I don't remember half of it. I do remember telling the guy this **** isn't working then kinda passing out, Once I really came too the pain was bad but it got better each day.
I never had surgery before, but I experienced very little "terrible" pain, and didn't even have a pain pump. They gave me pain meds (via IV) every six hours the night and then only when I requested them on the second night. I think I only requested them at bedtime to make myself a little more comfortable. The pain certainly wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't horrible. As a matter of fact, when I went home, I only took one dose of Tylenol with Codeine in order to sleep that night, and haven't taken a single pain killer of any type since. I'm 24 days out.
When i first woke up from my gallbladder coming out, I woke up screaming in agony (they needed to do another surgery, I had complications, the screaming was the first sign)
When I woke up from my tailbone surgery, I was in agony
When I woke up from RNY I only remember feeling sleepy... no pain.
