Dealing with snide comments - xpost

When I was first talking to my immediate supervisor about me having WLS and the time off I would need, his supervisor came over. The big boss "When I was at my heaviest I looked into weight loss surgery, but after reading about it I decided to just do it the hard way"
Now understand I am a very submissive, non-confrontational person. My reply:
" Well, I am paying someone to cut me and rearrange my guts. If you eat a piece of chocolate you have guilt and double duty at the gym, if I eat a piece of chocolate there could be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and dizziness... AND guilt and double duty at the gym. So I really wouldn't call it the easy way"

He muttered and walked away. :D YAY ME!

The ex..well it's the ex. There is nothing you can do about that nastiness.

But the nurses aide. I am completely appalled. She says that crap and works in a bariatric center? She's damn lucky she didn't say that to me. We would have been having a meeting right there and then with her, her supervisor, the doctor, and whoever else I could drag in there.  That behavior is NOT acceptable. Period.

Here is a good analogy that I came up with to counter the "you took the easy way out" comments.

One person said that and I responded, "Imagine for a moment that someone told you that you were allowed to breathe, but you can't use your lungs to do it. What do you suppose you'd do?"

The person stared blankly at me. I responded, "I'll be frank. That's what having WLS is like. Yes, I used to soothe with food. It's as natural to me to do that as it is for you to breathe with your lungs. So the day you can breathe easily with something OTHER than your lungs is the day I'll admit WLS was the easy way out, k?"

Shut them right up.

I've never gotten the easy way out comment, but my reply is that I took the ONLY way out. 99.9% of the time I say nothing at all. Very few people matter enough for me to work up a good mad.

For ex-wife: "That's interesting.  Since when have measuring portions, increasing protein, drinking more water, exercising and making proper food choices NOT been "natural???  Worry more about keeping that weight off and less about my weight-loss journey. Thanks."

For nurse's assistant: "(half-chuckle) OMG yeah, you're right, you would look REALLLLY unhealthy (smile, turn, walk away)."

For ex-wife - "The easy way??? ... wasn't that your nickname in High School??? I could have *sworn* that's what it said on the bathroom stall above your phone number ... hmmm".

For nurse assistant - "You seriously don't need to lose 22 pounds, but all women have our problem areas. For instance your chicken neck and dragon breath combo. Weight IS the least of your problems ... *shrug*" ...

But seriously, a friend of mine who lost a bunch of weight prepared me for the snide remarks. His suggested comeback was far more humble than mine were but equally poignant. He responds "Wooowww. That's such an insensitive remark I don't know quite how to respond to it." It makes people feel as small as they were attempting to make you feel.

Whichever method you choose, I wish you the best of luck on your journey lady!!!
