Having Protein Issues 4 wks post op

I had my RNY surgery on June 8th ,   I have been following my surgeon's guide for eating and the stages . I have no problem with cottage cheese or yogurt. Tuna fish plain  seems ok so far. But not much else agree's with my grouchy pouch. I have tried putting unflavored protein powder in yogurt , applesauce, broth , and oatmeal   but to no avail my pouch knows its in there and is miserable for hours. I have tried all my shakes and my Nector packets too and can't get one down. My pre op liver reduction diet I drank 4 shakes a day and didn't have any problem with them. I even switched to lactose free fat free milk. I am getting frustrated because I know I'm not getting the recommended 60 - 80 grams of protein in . Any advise would be welcomed .

Try water instead of milk and water it down and drink it over a longer period of time with some sips of water in between.

I am having the same problem. I dont like the protein shakes at all and i gag, i want optifast back. I'm 3 weeks out and no where close to getting enough protein. My hubby made me a smoothie yesterday and that helped. He put in ice cream that has no sugar added, 1% milk and 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder and a little piece of banana. i drank half of it and froze the other half, then ate it later with a spoon and my pouch was fine. Good luck

I literally just went to Vitamin Shoppe and got this Syntrax Nectar Ice Tea protein. It is 24 grams of whey isolate oer scoop which mixes in with water! Its like crystal light. Much easier on the pouch. Plus its only abou $32 for a huge container. So much better than all the shakes. Maybe something like this will sit better and let you still get all your protein in.

From the start I hated shakes and still do.  I made it a point to try everything protein just to avoid shakes.  Some things that helped me was Unjury protein chicken soup over a little mash potatoes, bluefin crab (in the packets),  Nectar (fuzzy navel) with tons of ice, shrimps, salmon, scrambled eggs with any of the above shell fish, plain greek yogurt  drizzled with sugar free honey,   I don't do cereal NOW but early out... I did do Special K or oatmeal with a protein shake to substitute milk, Lentil beans is good to try as well..... great tasting, low cal, and jam packed with protein
Now I do have an occasional "Pure Protein" shake when I don't have a meat, fish, or chicken source on hand and it's pretty good actually.
Just be creative and think protein protein, what can I do with it to make it tasty (low carb, low cal) and easy on my system.
It will get easier.

I have the same issues and it started at about 4 weeks out for me.  My pouch does not like protein shakes and knows any time I try to sneak one in.  I've started to drink 2-3 cups of milk a day.  As long as I do that I am able to get at least 60g protein a day.  Good Luck to you.

Weird, my surgeon only wants his patients to consume protein shakes for the first two weeks only. Perhaps trying other forms of protein until the pouch cooperates? In any case, I might contact your Dietician for help too. Good luck!!

What does your surgeon recommend eating three or four weeks out that will allow you to get at least 60 grams of protein (many people need more than that) without any protein shakes?
