My HGB etc were great for the 1st 2-3 years.  I even lost a TON of blood due to a bleed after my TT .  Hgb was 7.1 after and I was able to bring it back to normal.

I think we just slowly stop replenishing ferritin levels and they tank out.  Without decent ferritin you can't make blood cells no matter what your iron levels.  I have trouble getting my ferritin above 15- the wonderful part is My ins won't pay for infusions unless the Hgb is below normal and I am able to keep it low normal.

I was told by my surgeon not to ever give blood again. Even if my iron levels are high or not I'm going to listen to my doctors.
But if I was you next time really consult your doctor and research more about it but thats just my honest opinion.

I was also advised not to donate blood post op because it is very challenging for our bodies to replenish what we donate,

I used to donate regularly.

They won't let me (other health issues) but THANK YOU! My Uncle is receiving daily plasma apherisis treatments right now for TTP. Lots of people give blood, very few give plasma. I was told bypass by itself did not exclude us from giving blood, as long as our Dr. felt we were well enough to.

My doc said to wait at least a year before donating blood. I was a regular donator too, but I'd hate to give it and end up needing it back!

I don't THINK my surgeon ever mentioned any restriction on donating blood.  They won't take mine because I take a hefty dose of anitcoagulents, anyway, so I guess it's possible that she DID and I just didn;t pay any attention since it didn't apply to me.

I guess I don't understand why we would have trouble replenshing our blood after RNY...
