Carb Confusion...

I am the first one to admit I do eat carbs - probably more than most.  I do however watch the sugar - the carbs I have are mostly grains, etc.  In a perfect world I wouldn't eat the grains either, but my world is not perfect!  lol

So here is my question - when I was reading another post about Starbucks someone wrote that they are careful with the lattes (skinny ones) because of all the carbs!  HELP!!!  What does that mean?  I am supposed to have at least 2 glasses of skim milk per day as per my plan - I never think of milk as a guarded carb.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks!!!!!

I dont pay attention to natural carbs, like those found in dairy or fruit. I am careful to limit refined carbs like crackers, chips, breads, etc

I agree with not worrying as much about natural carbs as much - they do not bother me either

I do have issues with reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar after the high of alot of carbs) when I've had alot of carbs at once (chips and salsa AND a corn tortilla at lunch).  Since then I make sure I balance my carbs with protien and limit the quanity I eat per meal.

I generally follow the low carb (vs extremely low carb) diet of 25% carbs, 40% protien and 35% fats with a min. goal of 1 gram of protein per kilogram of ideal weight as my goal for protein.

I do not worry about the carbs in dairy products because I am also getting protein with those carbs.  Similarly, I don't worry too much about the carbs from whole grains or high fiber veggies because the fiber helps "offset" the carbs.

I was only told to significantly limit the "white food" carbs, and to watch the carbs in fruits.  Most of my carbs come from dairy products and fruits (I love fruit!), then -- to a lesser extent -- from veggies.

everyone's plan i different and that is one thing that i have learned fromt his forum.

the mot important thing, in my opinion, is to follow your plan by your doctor, nutritionist and team.  if you get caught in what other teams are doing, it may throw things off because your team may have other reasons for having you do something your way.

for example, my nutritionist was all about us drinking milk.  actually wanted us to drink what is called double milk, which is adding powered milk to milk for double protein.  they stressed to us that the sugar in milk is matabolized different than other sugars and it was ok.  they prefer we drink low fat or non fat milk over whole milk, however milk was a must in our food plan.

i was on foods by week two, some people on here are on liquids and purees for a month.  i do not believe there plan was wrong, but rahter different than mine.  i feel i have been very successful as on my plan as i have lost 83lbs in 4.5 months.

i would talk this out with your nutritionist so that he/she can explain it and how it works on your plan.

good luck!!!!

It is my humble opinion that many WLS patients worry too much about carbs.

Carbs are not "BAD". Too many refined carbs will lead to sugar spikes, crashes and cravings. But naturally occuring carbs are GOOD FOR YOU and should be part of a healthy post op eating program.

If you tolerate a naturally occuring carb and enjoy them, why avoid them? That is my approach and it's worked pretty good for almost 10 years.
