I don't use shakes very often these days.  I did for the first two years or so but most of the time I am able to get my protein from my food.  I never worried about carbs in shakes, though.

I was told to quit shakes after week 3.  I took that advice for a while but I'm back to drinking shakes now.  It is possible to get all your protein from food, but you have to be diligent about it.  Just aim for 20g per meal and you should be fine.  Good luck!!

Really??
My NUT preaches about protein shakes and would get on to me if I stop taking them. :/

I use the Low Carb Isopure powders in the grey tubs.

My nut told me that at 6 weeks.  It's possible to get all your protein without them, it just takes a bit more planning.  That being said, I still have a protein bar a day.

I "listen" to the so-called experts and then figure out what works for me. I still drink protein shakes 3 years out. I've lost 200 pounds and have maintained my weight for almost 2 years now, so they're not hurting me...

I drink EAS carb control shakes. They have 17 g protein and 4 g carbs.

My NUT told me to quit shakes at week 3. I did for awhile, but I started up again. I don't eat nearly enough food yet to get my protein from just that. There are protein drinks and powders which are low in carbs. Track your food using sparkpeople.com or another site that lets you track food and see if you're getting enough protein.

This is one more example of where each professional is different in their protocol.  Protein shakes and bars are meant to be supplements.  Many NUTs feel that after 6 weeks you should be able to get your 60g from solid dense foods, actually this is better for you in the long run because the shakes won't stay in your pouch very long so as your body starts to reconize hunger and full sensations it won't stay full for very long with shakes.

Early out is a time when your body (not your head) does not notice when you are hungry and to some extent when you are full, which gives you time to adopt new eating habits and change your relationship with food.

So look at how much protein you get from solid foods is it close to your daily goal or is it higher or lower.  This would be a good indicator on just how much you may want to supplement. Second thing to look at is your protein goal, is it the 60g your doctor wants is it higher or lower based on some other reason or did someone just say more protein is better.  Depending on your lifestyle your protein goals could be 2-3 times sometimes higher than the minimum 60g.

I am not going to say what is right and what is wrong as for other reasons I did mainly shakes for my first 5 months, maybe 1/4 - 1/3 a cup of actual food a day maybe 800 calories.  I went to an independent NUT who had no vested interest in me being a success so my surgeons numbers looked good, it was purely about me and some of her advice was counter to my surgeons, except that my protein goal was 60g.  It took a number of months and a lot of effort to scale back on the shakes and get my protein mainly from solid foods.

I had done so well until I really upped my exercise and had some metabolic testing done, this last appointment I was nervous to tell her that I was supplementing as much as 100g of protein a day putting my totals in the 160-180g.  She looked at my routine and all the information I had along with my fitness goals and said yes that is about where you need to be maybe a bit high but no worries.

So I am happily back on shakes but if it wasn't for everything else I would probably do no more than 1 in the morning for breakfast.

In the end you have to find what works for you and work with that.

I still drink a protein drink a day.  I use Nectar protein and mix it with water, 23 grms of whey isolate protein and 0 carbs.

I'm 6'5" and 397 after my 65 weight loss.  I need more than 60 grams a day and have found good shakes.  Low Carb, High Protein...  I have to do 2 a day to get where I need to be.  I mix with water and they are not bad tasting at all.  Cookies and Cream is way too sweet and is relegated for protein ice cream only
