im calling shennanigans too, in agreeance that we have little to no acid/bile left which i think is pretty obvious when we throw up. it doesn't have the same taste, look or odor as throw up pre-op did, it's definitely just the food or water/foamies not mixed with anything

I'm shrugging on this one too - My surgeon always wanted his patients to follow it and I never could. I've always been a naturally thirsty person because of seasonal allergies and whatnot.  I try not to drink loads just before a meal so that I'm not "full" when I start eating. I also have to drink hot tea or coffee first thing in the morning to sort of prepare my pouch for food.  I've found that my coffee fills me up to where I don't want to eat (even if it's decaff). Tea does the same, fills me up...maybe because I'm a bad girl and have to have a tablespoon of honey in it lol who knows.

Now I DO see the concept of not drinking right AFTER eating - I struggle with it because most foods make me thirsty. Sorry but when I eat peanut butter, I HAVE to have milk or the PB sticks.

I was told that it was fine to drink almost right up to the time I ate because the liquid would be gone in less than 5 minutes (depending on volume, of course).  I was also told that the two reasons for chewing so thoroughly were so that no large pieces could get stuck while the stoma is swollen right after surgery and because we need to rely more on the action of the saliva to break down the food since we no longer have the stomach acids/juices to do that.

During the very few times that I have thrown up food in the last four years, I have never noticed ANY amount of acid in what I have thrown up.... none of the nasty taste or burning sensation associated with the stomach contents, so I doubt that the normal stomach secretions exist in anything but negligible amounts in the pouch.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

That makes sense to me.  I have noticed the same thing when I throw up.  Which was very nice, by the way, since I had so much nausea and threw up so much in the first few months after surgery.

If the water doesn't stay in the pouch, I highly doubt the stomach acid does either.  But I'm no expert.

My doc said don't drink 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after---but with no explaination on why not to drink before.  I just thought he copied and pasted from somebody else's materials since a lot of what I got looked like that.

I didn't understand the reason so I never followed the rule.  I haven't had any problems so far, but in the back of my mind I've worried about being a rule breaker.
