Drove an hour to talk to her for less than 5 minutes. She said she would submit her clearance for my surgery to insurance. She asked if I knew why I couldnt drink soda [my goal] and, I said "high calories and no nutritional value". She added "and the bubble, they expand in your pouch" Dumb, dumb, dumb. Owell thanks to this site, I know better. My surgeon and dietician suggest Flinstones. UGH. My surgeon is well known and highly recomended. WHY are they giving poor suggestions/info  like this?

LOL I think there are alot of idiots out there in alot of fields. My psych eval..she asked me if I have ever tried to eat outta a medicine cup..LOL no really..have you lady?? That is the whole point of the surgery..what I told her too in a nice way. What my dr told me last visit..surgeon that is...is the bubbles in the carbanation can irritate your pouch. Never said expand. What is it a freaking balloon?LOL

It's much less stretchy than a balloon and it also has an opening on either end, so no, not much like a balloon.

I assume because they don't know any better, but you could ask them.

Exactly....thats the way my clinic is too and my clinic is a center of excellence.  They haven't given me stupid advice or anything like that accept for the vitamin regimin.  And the food advice..don't read labels, only eat sugar free/fat free/lo fat foods,, don't worry about calories, and you will be fine...yeah right.  The world wasn't designed around WL patients now was it...ha.  I was told 1 B12 a week...1 multi a day and Flintstones are fine because they are "complete".  Complete for who???  4 year olds with a natural normal digestive system?  Use Caltrate....ummm no...  So its a good thing i have found this site..because i would be chewing on yucky flintstones and starving to death still.  LOL
Oh and i have to drive 45 minutes for a 30 minute appointment tomorrow for my 3 month appoointment.  I won't go to my NUT anymore.. I can get better advice from you all and really there is nothing more she can help me with...my surgeons office can answer my same questions..

Flintstones really aren't complete for anybody.  I would not give them to a four year old.  But "complete" is not something that is legally defined.  They are allowed to write "complete" on the label even though they are missing a number of things.

Just like some other vitamins are legally allowed to write "bariatric" on the label even though they are not suitable for WLS folks at all, have forms of many vitamins and minerals we can't absorb, etc.

Unfortunately, some surgeons may be EXCELLENT surgeons, but are not very knowledgeable about nutrition... and some "nutritionists" have NO special training in bariatrics and, surprisingly, some have very little training in biology, so some of them are pretty useless to us.

It is also not THEIR health on the line, and often it is the PCPs, not the bariatric surgeon or nutritionist, who end up treating patients down the line when nutritional problems develop.

Totally agree with Lora and Kelly. The surgeon who is removing my gallbladder recommended those dumb Flintstone vitamins. I just smiled, but all the while I was thinking 'no way in hell'.

He was recommending them on the basis of price, I think. While I appreciate pinching pennies on some things, not my vitamins.

I have to remind myself that I will know lots more about my needs than many of the medical professionals I see.

Flintstones are cheap, but you can get a good generic adult vitamin for as little or even less money.  Someone did a cost comparison between Flintstones and  Centrum and the Centrum came out to a couple pennies more a dose.  I think it's insulting when docs assume that we are so poverty-stricken that we cannot afford a couple pennies or that we don't know our vitamins should be a priority and aren't willing to sacrifice whatever to get those couple pennies.
