thought I would share this

I came across something on OA.org that I found meaningful and thought I would share.

But food can never satisfy my loneliness, fear or discomfort. Every meal ends. Food is meant for physical, not emotional, nourishment. Food can’t grin, hug, listen, give love or speak encouraging words. I eat it, and then it’s gone.

I've been really craving carbs lately and giving in to them more than I can feel good about.  I need to remember this.  The carbs might make me feel better for a minute, but every meal does end.  And ends pretty fast since I had RNY - somehow eating two small slices of bread fresh from the oven does not give me that same feeling that eating half a loaf or more used to give me.  And the comforting feeling doesn't last long at all.  In which case, I might as well just skip it.

Doing what you do requires thinking ahead and planning. It means saying no to instant gratification and yes to delayed gratification. This is un-American. This is the land of the free and home of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. A McD's on every corner with two drive up lanes not just one to get faster service.
I really can't say much. I managed to lose 70 pounds and keep them off for over 10 years so far by eating like you suggest. If everyone did that the bariatric providers would be out of business. Think of the effect on the economy.

Since health care is the only industry Cleveland has left, it is our civic duty to encourage illness to stimulate the economy.

Bravo!

hhhmmmm that was pretty deep..thanks for posting that.

I just don't think i personally use food for emotional reasons..i don't think i am lonely or whatever and reach for food..i don't seem to reach for food when i am mad or sad...my problem was eating to muchat a meal...maybe it was the fear my mother put into me (cause she was a child of the 30's after all) that you gotta eat it all...you can't waste...no matter if your full or not you gotta eat it kind of attitude.  I don't remember much of a food issue growing up but what i do rememmber is LOTS of ice cream, popcorn thick with butter and popped in oil, potatoe chips..with dip..soda..and lots of carb like foods growing up.  But because of this i graze..and have started doing this again somewhat...so i gotta watch myself...

You might not use food for emotional reasons.  I think many obese people do but that doesn't mean all do.  And of those of us that do, some do it more often, of course, than others.

My sister once told me something interesting she'd read somewhere about the whole "don't waste" mentality.  She said she'd read that it was kind of like treating yourself like a human garbage disposal, eating the stuff instead of throwing it out.  She said once she thought about that, she was able to quit doing it.

I was definitely an emotional eater, tho I never told my psychiatrist that :) Now, after surgery, I don't know if I grew up some or if I just decided it was time to face things rather than eat until I was thinking about how full/sick I was, rather than what I was upset about. Usually it would be real petty arguments with my bf. Now, if we have a disagreement, I don't turn to food at all, we talk and never end up fighting over whatever it was because we are addressing the problem, I'm not covering it with pizza, bread, etc. Having this surgery has definitely helped my mental/emotional state as well as my physical well-being. Good post, thanks for sharing!
