Did you Surgeon Do a Leak Test? Scan for Clots?

A number of surgeons do not do leak tests routinely.  I'm not sure why because it does make sense to me to do one.  However, my surgeon was very experienced and was board certified and did not do leak tests on his patients.  I think he would be considered a reputable surgeon - if board certified and many years of experience doesn't make a doc reputable, what does?

my surgeon does the leak test. I am prone to clots but they just "bridged" me with lovenox while I was off the warfarin. Didnt have a problem. but otherwise no, they dont do ultrasounds for clots unless you are symptomatic.

I did not have a leak test or a scan for clots.

ETA: I am guessing now that I had a leak test while on the table.  But I did not have one the next day.

my surgeon did a check for leaks while I was on the table, standard for the clinic I'm working through. My understanding was my insides were filled with fluids and they check for any bubbles to indicate a leak.

I posted here but something happened to it. If it shows up later I don't know how it happened.

My doctor said that he fills the pouch with air, then floods the new incision with water and checks the staples for leaks before he closes. I had no problems. In fact I have been very happy with him and the entire staff at IU Med Center and Bariatric Center. It pays to find a practice with a Standard of Excellence rating.

My surgeon performs 2 leak tests on the table as well as doing the scan for leaks the next day. I waited until after the 3rd leak test to have liquids.

My surgeon's group no longer routinely does leak tests because of their overall results and only performs them when there is some question of a possible leak.  I had a leak test because "lucky me" the staple gun malfunctioned during my surgery and he wanted to be sure all was ok.  So, for him, leak tests are the exception, not the norm.  By the way, I had no leak :o)

As for the clot testing, I didn't have that.  I wonder if that is based on risk factors and medical history?  I believe what would be done is an ultrasound of the legs.  The hospital has little cuffs they can put on your legs that inflate and deflate like blood pressure cuffs (the name escapes me at the moment) to improve circulation in the legs and help prevent clots.  You can also have blood thinners for prevention.  I didn't want the boots as I wanted to get out of bed when I wanted to walk the corridors, which is also good for preventing clots.

I wish you the best with your surgery!

My surgeon performs the leak test while the patient is still in surgery.  That way, if there is a leak, he can fix it immediately.

I also had a venous doppler test the day after surgery to see if i had developed any clots.  They are common in abdomenal surgeries.  I had a clot years ago and had a filter put in "just in case" so i don't know if they doppler normal folks.

I had the 'leak test' the day after surgery.  I not only had to wait for the contrast to clear the pouch without leaking but I couldn't have any liquids or ice chips until it passed from the stoma into the intestine.

It was a pia but my surgeon has an excellent track record and better safe then sorry.

My surgeon performs a leak test while the patient is on the table and also the next day before we can start drinking fluids.  I did not have a scan for clots but I have never been prone to clots.  I did have the compression things on my legs while in bed.  As soon as I was up and walking they took them off so I did not have them on long.  I was sitting in the chair or walking most of the time.
