Happy Saturday1

Can some explain to me what 'Sugar Alcohol" is and should we indulge.  I have been watching my sugar intake (not sure how much should I eat per serving).  What is the difference between the two?

I can only tolerate 2-3 grams of sugar alcohols due to the gastric upset they cause (severe gas pains, bloating and diarrehea). I could not tolerate them prior to RNY either. As far as sugar, I can eat up to 30 grams in a meal with no effect. It is best to start gradually at 5 grams and work your way up to see what you can tolerate. Only 30-40% of RNY'ers dump on sugar. The sugar grams I consume are not from refined foods.

Essentially, sugar alcohols are the artificial sweeneters found in many reduced calorie food items.  Anything that ends with "-itol" is a sugar alcohol (e.g., xylitol).  How much you can/should eat depends on how you react to them.  I tolerate real sugar better than sugar alcohols.

I can handle more sugar than I can sugar alcohols. 6g of sugar won't affect me but 6g of sugar alcohols will make me feel very nauseous.
