Update on RNY 12/21
My RNY was performed by Dr. Stanley Hoehn at Shawnee Mission Medical Center onTuesday, 12/21/11 at 945 am.
I arrived, prepped for surgery and wheeled into the operating room. Zonk. Woke up in recovery. Was taken to my room about 1 pm.
I experienced very uncomfortable cramping and spasms in my esophagus from the recovery room until about 7:30 pm. In the recovery room I would tense up and grab the bed railings when it happened. The nurse was very helpful and suggested I relax and deep breathe instead of tensing up, which did help.
During the evening the spasms only happened when I talked a lot or swallowed but were not as severe. The nurse suggested it was from all that air inserted from surgery that was pushing up on the diaphragm, as well as irritation from the intubation. I was better able to handle it when I saw it as temporary discomfort rather than a complication.
Lots and lots of gas. Walk, walk, walk to get rid of it. I found just going from a sitting to standing position as well as walking helped get rid of the gas. A light massage of the stomach helped burps come up too.
No major abdominal pain, feel like I wa**** in the stomach - just soreness.
I did experience intense nausea a couple of times - once after watching an ocean scene on their relaxation TV channel and the other time after I drank liquid medicine too quickly. Zofran in the IV worked immediately. They prescribed it in pill form in case I experienced nausea at home.
I was expecting to feel so much worse than what I did. I have felt great. I wanted to get up and walk as soon as I got to my room, but they didn't let me until about 10pm.
A couple of things have sort of worried me but the doctor has reassured me that it was okay. The evening of surgery I coughed up some blood, which they said was residual from inside my stomach. When I got home I had quite a bit of liquid blood in the stool. I called the Dr. and he said that is also considered residual and to not worry unless I feel lightheaded and have stomach pains.
I've had a great experience so far. Terrific nursing care in the hospital. My family has been wonderful and supportive.
No buyer's remorse - this has been a well planned and thought out choice that I made and I will live with the perks and consequences.
I told my family that I might be weepy a few days later from some of the hormonal changes after surgery (I am not a weepy person at all). They are teasing me now that I will probably cry after every present that is opened on Christmas. We'll see!
Thank to all of you here on obesityhelp. Your postings have helped educate me and prepare for this life changing event. I hope my details will help the next person getting ready for surgery.
