Bone Density Scan- anyone had one?

My surgeon's nurse said it would be a good idea to get a baseline done and I agree it makes sense to see that I'm taking enough calcium and not leeching from my bones.  Presuming they do another scan in a year or so.

My family doctor who has to put in the referrals for tricare thought they might baulk at doing it.  I need to follow up with this because I see my mammo referral on the website was approved but there is no sign of the authorization for the scan. Maybe the doctor's office forgot to put it in (wouldn't be the first time) but just wondering if it's the norm to have this done.  I don't see any posts on it so I'm guessing it's not done routinely.

I had one done a couple of years ago.  I forget what the justification was.  I think it might have been my gyno *****quested it.

My surgeon's office has everyone get a bone density done before surgery and once a year after that.  My insurance had no problem with it, but I have Anthem.

Yes, I had one at one year out.  It's time for another.  I don't have Tricare, so I don't know if they will be hesitant to pay for it or not.  Medicare paid for mine with no problem.

ETA: They cost about $300 if you have to pay for it yourself.  I think it's worth the money.

Absolutely!!  I tell people in my support group always to get it done at least by year 1-2 post op.

And if you don't get one done before surgery, get one done at least a year out to make sure calcium isn't leeching from your bones.

I've had three now.  Not much at all. Takes around 15-20 minutes and you just lay on a table while they position you and a machine hovers over back and forth on top of you. One of the easiest procedures to go through thankfully.

Sounds like I need to chase up my doctor.  Lucky, I've got an appointment on Monday with them to inspect my lady-parts so I'll ask them if it was submitted to Tricare or not.  (Bet it wasn't)

I was told to get one also, because of having RNY and also because I have been on the depo shot for about 10 years.  They also recommended that I find another form of birth control.  Haven't done either yet, only 6 months out from RNY.
