RMR (resting metabolic rate)

How do you figure this out???

Curious to know how many calories I burn sitting on my tush - compared to working out....

Is this mathematical?? Or does it need to be figured by your PCP??

Thanks for the info in advance!!!!

There are many different ways to calculate your RMR. The easiest ( but not most accurate is to google rmr calculators. I believe there is one at livestrong.com or caloriesperhour.com. Most of these calculators use the Harris Benedict formula, a mathematical equation based on weight, gender age.

To have a truly accurate test performed a breathing apparatus mechanical test which actually measures oxygen volume consumption can be done. Some gyms have a smaller hand held device that is fairly accurate, the gold standard being the oxygen volume at rest test. If you are near a University, they sometimes offer testing for a small price to help train their exercise science students.

Plus if you google RMR you'll find a bunch of great websites that explain fully RMR v BMR, etc.

Happy researching!

As already mentioned, there is a formula that will get you in the ballpark, but it will not take your individual metabolism into account, and that can be a significant factor for us since many of us have destroyed our metabolisms by years of dieting (and, in some cases, have had our metabolism drop permanently after the surgery).

The mechanical measurement can be done at some fitness centers, is often offered at Heath Fair types of events, or may be offered periodically as part of general heath screenings by a local hospital. I would not expect a PCP to have the machine to do it, but some might.

One of the hospitals where I am offers it about 3 times a year for about $25.  I was also able to get a body fat % done (it helped me verify how accurate my home digital scale is at body fat %).
