a question for those that dump -

I do not dump.  Although I don't push the situation, there are some things I have eaten that one would think would make me dump.  Like sugar - it does not phase me at all.  Bread doesn't seem to phase me either.

My question is - how quickly after you eat something do you experience dumping?  I am thinking it would be pretty quick.

I am 3 months out - I am just now starting to be aware of fullness but that might be related to my doctor just recently approving me to go on more solid foods.  I really had expected to have more negative reactions to things. Now I am wishing I did have reactions so food would frighten me a bit more.

There are 2 types of dumping - early dumping & late dumping. I'll try to attach a flowsheet to this post that explain them, but the short of this is that early dumping usually happens pretty quickly after eating (maybe 15-20 min?) and has some classic symptoms: rapid heart beat, shakiness, sweats/ chills, abdominal cramping, tiredness. Sometimes people have digestive distress, some don't. Different people may have different thresholds for dumping, majority RNYers won't dump at all. It's not fun, believe me, but it sometimes seems like nature's way of teaching one aversion therapy!

It is usually within just a few minutes.  Exactly how long often depends on how much sugar and in what form (a sugary drink can cause it to happen VERY quickly).  You might dump but only with higher levels of sugar (I can tolerate up to about 25g of sugar with little ill effect, but can dump BIG time beyond that).

I "early dump" really easily and it's a *****! Feels like I'm dying - and I am completely incapacitated and on the edge of consciousness very scary for me and anyone seeing it ... Can't tell you how many times my husband has had to persuade people NOT to call an ambulance.

I have dumped easily from day one and it's exactly the same for me 7.5 years out - I know my usual triggers and can avoid them but every so often something unexpected bites me in the ass! Definitely keeps me real about what I consume.

Why are you eating sugar and bread?  I don't think I tasted real sugar for the first year.  I dump fast and hard...but I don't dump on the same things all the time.  Something might give me a hard time on one occasion and not really phase me the next.  I would avoid the sugars and breads much longer...its only to help you with your success.  I know we all are anxious to see whether we will dum*****t...but please concentrate on your food plan...

also...don't eat till you feel full..those feelings are always true physical feelings..Measure you food...its important.  You have nerves that have been cut in your pouch and you a true measurment of fullness by feelings.

my food plan introduced sugar and breads before i even hit full solids at 4 weeks. my rd/surgeon concentrate on a full well-balanced meal plan rather than just protein 24/7. they want us to learn how to eat properly from the start rather than all of a sudden start introducing things a year later when people are more likely to binge.

as for the original question it takes me about 10-20 minutes depending what it is, but compared to others on the board i dump fairly easily

I dump really fast.  Under 10 minutes.  I get the whole sweaty, heart racing, sick feeling.  It's no fun.  I have learned to avoid it.  Mainly higher carb stuff is what gets me.  Orange juice is a big one for me.
