"Good" Carbs
I read a lot of posts about folks not eating more than 50 carbs in a day. Sometimes I get less, but a lot of times I get MORE. The thing is, my carbs are from broccoli, carrots (with meal) carrots and such for snacks, milk if I have a protein shake, yogurt (greek) and cottage cheese.
I don't eat bread, rice or pasta. I don't eat white potatoes.
Do I still need to aim for less than 50 carbs?

I had surgery the day after you! I still aim for 50g or less of carbs a day, but the further out I get, the less I focus on it. I focus more on making sure those carbs are healthy carbs - like fiber. I don't get too uptight about carbs from fruit and veggies. I avoid the refined carbs like you. Whole grains all the time when I do have grains. I don't get a lot of carbs from dairy because I don't drink milk and only do greek yogurt on occasion. As I get further out, I am trying to make it more about focusing on the big picture and eating in a healthy way I can maintain for life. We need carbs, so I eat carbs. I just make the best use of my carbs as I can! Hope that helps :)
I think it's up to you. It's whatever works for you.
I eat way more than 50 carbs in a day. I mean, I don't actually count carbs, but it's not at all unusual for me to eat a cup of beans for lunch, a protein shake for a snack (made with milk), to have some yogurt with some fruit on it for another snack... depending on what kind of beans I ate, that would be more than 50 carbs right there. Then add in some veggies for dinner and I would have to be way over 50.
It works for me. Did not keep me from reaching goal. Is not keeping me from maintaining at goal.

according to myfitnesspal, i average about 60-65 grams of carbs a day.. but i always wondered what was considered "too much".. sometimes it makes me worry, but as much as i try, i cant seem to get any lower than 45-50 anyways, lol.. so i just go with it.. ive had success with it, and i guess if i stay consistent, it cant be too bad?
Not all carbs are created equal. Fiber is a carb. Without it all of us would be very uncomfortable.
Veggies, fruits, whole grains, dairy products are or have a lot of carbs. Those are the carbs you want to eat.
"White Carbs" (flour, sugar, white rice, white potatoes, white pasta) are what you want to avoid.
Nik on Bariatric Foodie did a series on carbs a while back. Go to her site and search.

The thing to remember is that we need Carbs. It isn't healthy to cut them totally out of your diet. I have days where I get around 65 and days I get more. The days I am getting more I am eating beans, greek yogurt, and veggies. THis is a concept I have struggled with as well, but I think I am doing pretty well. My protein is around 100 grams, my calories are under 900, and my fat is under 20 grams. Personally I think you are doing well to concentrate on the good carbs. It will be interesting to read the answers.
