considering the surgery
I am seeing the surgeon for my first consult Tues. I have had weight issues my whole life. I am 5ft 4in and have been up to 222lb at one point. I have been on every diet, diet pill, weigh****chers etc. Always successful at losing weight, but never keeping it off. I now am a type 2 diabetic, I have thyriod disease. My BMI is currently 35. I wear a 14 to 16. I really want this. I know I am on the bottom end for even quailfying but feel like I really want this change. I am tired of being fat and always feeling hungry or eating things I shouldn't.. Am I being unreasonable for wanting to have this surgery. I am considered obsese according to my BMI.

I don't think you are unreasonable for considering surgery, just educate yourself, it can't hurt to learn new things. I am also 5'4" and I was up to 246 lbs, size 20/22. I did Weigh****chers (several times) joined the gym, diet pills, diets, et****il I just accepted I needed help. Unlike you however, I was never successful at losing any significant amount of weight. I'm not sure if you have good insurance, but it does sound like you may be at the bare minimum for coverage. I can tell you honestly though, this LIFESTYLE change is probably harder than you think. Best of luck and health to you!
When I started my journey, I was 224, Im 5'5" and had a BMI of around 36.6 (I think). I had the very same feelings; wondered if WLS was an overkill for me. I had surgery on 2/13 and have lost a total of 28lbs (11 since surgery). I no longer take any insulin (was on 4 shots a day) and the only other medication I am still on is a very low dose of BP meds. I also found out that my liver had scarring that is irreversible. It absolutely floors me the amount of health issues I was having; but needless to say... Im super glad I did it!

Do the research and make an informed decision. I went through all the preparation to have the surgery in 2007 and got approved by my insurance but chickened out and decided to try one last time to lose weight on my own. I lost a bunch of weight but gained it back and then some. That's when I recognized that obesity really is a diseas and that the only long term solution for success for me would be weight loss surgery. It's an individual choice that no one can make for you. The time has to be right and you have to believe it's what's best for you. Best of luck to you in making your decision!

Aled,
There is no way you are unreasonable for wanting this surgery. I am 5'1" and weigh 224
right now. That is after losing 12 pounds since October. I am afraid of diabetes becoming
an issue. You have to think of your health. If this surgery helps to make you a healthier
person, than it is a good thing. My BMI started at 43.3 and wearing a size 18-20. I too
have tried every diet known to man. I think everyone has gone this route. I am sure you
didn't make this decision easily. A lot of thought goes into finding the right way to achieve
a healthier and thinner life. I wish you luck.
