Why cant I vomit?

All I bring up is slime and foam. Is there a medical explination why some RNY people can not vomit food back up?

Got a stupid question, but are you willfully trying to vomit? Or is your digestive system in distress and its trying to vomit but can't?

I've only thrown up twice in 8 months and both times had absolutely no choice. The food was coming back up whether I wanted it to or not. And this was totally because I wasn't mindful in my eating...too large of bites, too unchewed, too fast

But thinking about it from a mechanical perspective. The pouch is very, very small (compared to what the original stomach was). And probably has little muscle tissue to create peristaltis to forcefully regurgitate. But if'n it's truly objecting to what's in the pouch, I believe it can and will will hurl back up what is there causing the distress. But I'm not sure you can force it to...well, at least I can't!

Edited to add: think about it like this, since we don't have a controlling valve on the intestinal end of our pouch, the force needed to regurgitate is probably dissapated or reduced because of the inability to create a upwards pressure. Imagine if you will putting something in a plastic bag that is open on both ends. Unless you can close off one end (the bottom) you can't get enough pressure or force to push the item out of the top opening. Well at least in my mechanically challenged vision that's how I see it happening (or not).

No question is stupid. Im not willfully trying to vomit but can usaully pinpoint why I feel nauseaus and want to vomit (for relief).

Reasons for nausea and foamies/slime have been:

Drinking after eating. SOMETIMES I JUST H A V E TO HAVE A DRINK AFTER I EAT!  I need to start having a big drink of water before I eat and a small sip or 2 after if I NEED to.

Eating too much. (Nuff said)

Certain foods

-pistachios
-chocolate
-anything greasy ( 1 mozarella stick from Applebee's nightmare )

Yes... your pouch is very small and therefore is much less muscle than your original stomach... and you require muscle pressure in order to vomit... so it is harder to voluntarily vomit.  SOme poeple just seemt o be able to do it more than others. When your body does it on its own, however, it utilizes a whole series of coordinated muscular contractions to accompli****

I have only experienced slime and foam when I get food stuck. That's the only time anything comes back up for me. If you are eating meat, like chicken or roast or something you can get papaya enzyme pills and it seems to help "disolve" the meat and you can pass it rather than it coming back up. Chicken was the worst for me. I am 6 months out and tried chicken for the first time since I stopped just the other day and I can eat it better but not great. The papaya enzymes taste like candy, you chew them and I got mine at a grocery store pharmacy. Cheap too. Really make a difference!

after I had my surgery for reflux in 1998, I physically couldnt vomit even when sic****il I had my RNY in 2008  = it was terrible +  I would be so nauseous I would want to die sometimes and no matter what I tried to do sometimes, I couldn't vomit.  Then after my RNY, now I can vomit.  When I mentioned this to my surgeon that did my reflux surgery he said it made no sense but it happened.  Now, when I eat to fast  I get foamies or things get stuck.  I will have push and push until I bring them back up. If I forget and drink after I eat, I will vomit the liquid that I just drank back up because it won't go down - it just sits on top of the food that I had eaten - the food doesnt go down that fast.  Once the food does down, then  I can drink and it will go down.  I know they say we have a valve and things go right down but it doesnt work for me.

I can't either unless I force myself (put my finger down my throat).  I don't do this unless absolutely necessary.  I've had beef roast suck a couple of times and HAD to get it up trying to let it pass was to uncomfortable.

I hear this occassionally, it's like the gag reflex is gone.

Yea it's really difficult to vomit post op... your stomach is a muscle and after RNY there's not much left to clench and force out whatever it is that isn't agreeing with you so yeah, not being able to puke is normal!  Vomiting and dry heaving can put a lot of strain on our stomachs so we sould NOT induce or even get to that piont!!

I'm not sure if you've ever successfully vomited but...  I've done it once in 13 Months... and it was AWFUL!

Thanksgiving day:  I was doing well - made myself a small plate and stuck to it.   An hour later (while my guests were relaxing in the living room, I was sweating profusely on the floor in front of my toilet just waiting... I could dry heave but hardly anything came up.  When I finally did it was more like spit up than vomit and it hurt LIKE HELL!!!

I learned a valuable lesson that day... and I never EVER want to have that feeling again!!

I cant, pretty much no matter what. I get horribly intense migraines that make me extremely nauseous. I cant vomit, just lots of heaving and noise. Partied a little too hard as well and nothing comes out. just a little 'spittle'.  Note to self, you cant drink like you did preop!! Do not do that again.

Ive never tried to purposely. I spent enough time vomiting with my band.
