Did you have to do this yes or no?

I started looking at this surgery years ago like 8 or 9 LOL finally doing it. My Dr said he doesn't do this test. But in the past the Drs all said yes they did. I saw yesterday a OH poster had it and passed out. I hear this is the most painful thing to a lot of people.

So do you have it and if yes what was it like....I just want to be prepared if they come at me with a needle going towards my wrist it is in my wrist right! Because that is a deal breaker here!!!!

I had it done in the ER once about 10 years ago, but have not heard of it in relation to my RNY in any way. It was quick, but it hurt like hell!!

I had it done in the ER about 10 years ago too after a bout of unexplained fainting.  Hurt like a mofo but they did warn me and they should warn YOU too!

Yes, I did have it. The respiratory tech did it as part of my work up. It does hurt, but mainly the pain, for me, was deep in my wrist. It faded in a couple of hours.

The tech offered me some numbing gel but said that since most of the pain would be emanating from an area not easily numbed, it was of limited use. I declined it.

I think mine hurt less than some other folks have said due to her skill. She said she does a fair number of them for surgery workups, so she had some practice.

I went back to work that day and typed all day, so it didn't keep me from work.

I had it done as part of my pre-surgery testing and it wasn't any worse than getting blood drawn, the tech was very gentle and I didn't  really have  any pain from it....hope it goes that well for you too!

Like April said, I had it and it did not  hurt anymore then any other blood drawn.
I had it as part of pre op for my RNY.

Good luck, lets us know if you have it and how it went .

 Hi MichelleNC,
You can stop worrying right now :)  I'm a surgical ICU nurse and I can tell you all about this test.  First of all, it's usually only done pre-op if the patient is a smoker or has repiratory issues such as asthma, COPD, emphysema, etc.  You would know if you are being treated for a respiratory disorder pre-op :)  Secondly, if they even mention that they want to do this test, just tell them that you want the test done AFTER you are put to sleep.  This should definitely be an option if you request it.  Most people just don't know to request it be done after anesthesia induction.  You're the patient and you're the boss.  After all, it's YOUR body!  I only say this because it is an option.  Yes, they do pre-oxygenate you prior to intubating (putting the breathing tube in) you, but if you make your request known ahead of time, they should take measures to accomadate you.  It"s really not that hard.....just make your wishes very clear.  I hope this information helps.  Let me know if you have any more questions!!
