Uping Intake

The past few days I've been feeling more hunger & not being satisfied after eating, so I will drink & drink & drink hoping its just thirst & not hunger. Even with drinking I still feel the hunger. I have been eating like 2-2.5 oz or half a cup of food & it just doesn't seem enough. I measure & weigh everything, because I really don't want to overeat. Yesterday I ate probably 1/4th of a cup more & actually felt satisfied & didn't think about food in between.

So when did you know you needed to up your intake?

What ques did you have to increase your food intake?

  • These are the rules I followed/follow:
  • *3-6 Months After Surgery: I ate 600-700 calories a day
  • *6-9 Months After Surgery: I ate 800-900 calories a day
  • *9-12 Months After Surgery: I ate 1000 calories a day
  • *12-18 Months After Surgery: eat 1200 calories a day (I ate 1200 calories a day until 15 months when I reached my goal weight)
  • *18 Months after surgery (or when goal weight is reached before 18 months): Maintenance calories (BMR/RMR & Activity Level) (Malabsorption of calories lasts approximately 18-24 months) (I eat 1700-1800 calories a day to maintain my weight loss of 200 pounds at a weight of 131 pounds. My height is 5'4")
  • I do not participate in a formal exercise program due to Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis. I do move around a lot more and do a lot more walking.

I would highly suggest you consult your surgeon.  Portion control is typically STRESSED by surgeons for several months post op.  Eating suggested portions and the allowed foods at the specific time frame recommended by your surgeon is probably best, unless suggested otherwise by your surgeon.  The first 6 months is typically considered the "honeymoon period" where you'll have the geatest wt loss.  My surgeon usually only suggests upping intake food quantities around 5 to 6 months. Your surgeon may or may not think upping food quantity at this time a wise decision.  I'd call the surgeon's office, and not rely on outside guidance at this time. DAVE

I have consulted the surgeon & my NUT & all they tell me is to eat until I feel satisfied. My problem is I don't feel satisfied, that's why I weigh & measure my food. Its easier for me to have a measurement or weight or something. I was just wondering if you all had any signals or ques as to when you needed to start some gradual increase of food. Thank you both for posting, every bit of feedback I get is very helpful.

do you just eat 3 meals a day or do you have snacks?  every plan is different.  I have 'snacks', but they are protein based like cheese, yogurt. I have found on the days that I actually eat all of my planned food I am pretty satisfied.

I guess I've had head issues with eating 6 meals a day. I know it's only small meals, but my head is thinking 6 meals is a lot. I'll work with the 3 meals & add in 2-3 high protein snacks. It makes sense to me now why I would feel like I could eat more. Don't know why I didn't think about it that way. Thanks so much for you all posting. I'm happy to have this forum as another form of support.
