Most of our insurance companies require us to try to lose weight without surgery.  Even those of us who were self pay, probably had to try to lose weight without surgery before their surgeon would touch us (at least at some point).

It seems to me that the logic of these two particular people was faulty in that (1)  they don't know what your health problems were (and of course, it's none of their business), and (2) they assumed you wanted to be congratulated (When I've joined weight loss groups, it's been for accountabilibility.  It appears you joined the group to support your friend).

I might have said something, and the way I talk, people's eyes glaze over, which I figure is punishment enough for being judgmental.

Isn't it amazing what people think of this surgery? I will admit I was one of them for awhile many years ago. Oh she had surgery that is why she is so skinny. PLEASE the surgery can help you get skinny but it is a tool and you have to learn to live a new life and make it work oh and did I mention you can die? How is this ever considered the easy way out?

Lady 1 didn't know if you have health problems and really it isn't any of her business. It isn't fair well what about the other end of the spectrum it isn't fair that you work your butt off in the gym 2 hours a day after a long day or before a long day at work you lose some weight but weight eventually keeps creeping back up. Your not one of the ones that that alone works for. So yea you just decided on a whim let me get this surgery PLEASSSSSE anyone have a can of whoop ass because I need to open some up on her!

Lady 2 Ok you won't be a supporter that is fine keep it moving. If you think this is cheating I guess you think the guy who had a pacemaker put in his chest so he can live is a cheat too? Obesity kills people cheat away honey you are taking care of you!

I would like to know the date and time for the toilet papering of these two ignorant women's homes!

Bearing in mind that this is a weight loss group, I'm not surprised that they think you cheated or took the easy way out - compared to them, you did!

However, this is not an insult to you - but to them.   As an intelligent woman, why would you take the hard way when the easier way is available?    Surgery does make weight loss and maintenance easier - why would we have our digestive system re-routed otherwise?

They are in a competition with you that they will never win - that's why they are pissy!   Handle any comments they make with a little smile and a lot of class ...

I suppose the women who have breast cancer run high in thier family and they decide to have thier breasts removed to prevent the cancer from occuring in them..is this cheating death, is it taking the easy way out to avoid cancer treatments. You know cancer (and obesity) can kill you. I mean under thier way of thinking, These women have no health risks at the time but they know it is comming. Just like us

This calls for my favorite saying,

"Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience."

I try to live that everyday as I continually seem to be surrounded by these "experts"

Hilarious .. Also to everyone here thanks for your support they really trashed my ego there although I did not say a peep. I felt bad and it felt bad to see my friend who encouraged me to join ("It dosen't matter how you lose" )tell my personal information to another person and sit there and trash me. (because I had surgery) so even if she did do a hypothetical situation I know it was because of me. I am so glad to have all of you who understand what that feels like. I realize I didn't have to say anything now. I'm telling well informed people of my experience and will continue to share and celebrate all the goals we meet that is how I can get back at them. :)
