Hi - I am having a sleep study done on Sunday night.  As silly as this sounds, I am very nervous about it.  Anyone willing to share their experience with these?

Thanks!

My sleep study is on Sunday night, too. I am nervous, also.  I'm not entirely sure what to expect....  I hope I can fall asleep... I might have to take my night medication that evening.  I only take it prn, but it makes me have this "hungover" feeling the next day that lasts all day.  I think this is one of those times I'll have to take it to help with the nerves.

It is nothing to worry about. Try not to consume anything that might keep you awake before you go. It is set up like a hotel room and they put something like little instruments in your hair/scalp. It isn't gross and washes out so don't worry about that.

Our (husband and I) experience was that he was checked for sleep apnea, which I know he has and I have RLS. Their result showed me with SA and RLS and he was fine. So I know the test can be off.

I had to have asleep study done before my RNY. I had no idea what i was walking into and it was probably half as bad as i expected lol. You walk in and change into your pajamas and then the wiring begins. They wire you up with tonso f different wires and they all end up being pulled together behind you, above your head when you lay down. For me i had a super hard time falling asleep because i am a side/stomach sleeper and they prefer that you lay on your back. Once i got to sleep it was ok, i did toss and turn more than normal but it is very interesting what they find! No sleep apnea for me thank good ness! Good luck to you guys!

Hopefully we will get some people to share what to expect. I have a hard enough time sleeping. I know this sounds silly, but do they watch us sleep?

It is only bad if you move alot during your sleep because of all the wires they get tangled and they can unhook so they make you be still, if you are use to sleeping with your hair up as i do because it is so long then you will have a hard time because once the wires are in your hair you cant touch hair to move it out of the way. the machine doesnt beep or anything and if you can fall asleep fast then you are good to go. I was able to leave by 5 am because I feel asleep fast. I also took motrin pm because the first time i went i had anxiety attack and could not sleep and so i left this time i helped myself and it went very quickly.  if you sleep with th tv on that may cause a problem because they turn the tv off at 10-11. I brought a book and didnt get to read it becasue it was so dark. you will do fine and it will be over before you know it. good luck

Yes, they do watch you sleep. Well, i'm sure they aren't staring are you for 8 hours but they do have cameras in the room along with a speaker system. They can talk to you and you can talk to them through it. I think sometimes through the night they try to wake you up and see what you do. At the end of my study the next morning they asked a few questions and one was how many times did i THINK i woke up and how may times did i think THEY woke me up.

There is really nothing to worry about. You go to sleep with some wires taped to your head, body and a finger. They film you overnight and chart your sleep patterns.  Your surgeon's anesthesiologist needs to know whether you have sleep apnea.  I had a colonoscopy some years ago prior to my RNY. The aneshesia doc asked me if I really had sleep apnea. I told him yes. He then told me they make a different anesthesia "****tail" for sleep apnea patients. Wrong anesthesia with sleep apnea, and you'll have trouble waking up from major surgery, or there is a remote chance you might not wake up at all.  The test is done for your benefit so you recover from the anesthesia as easily as possible.  Thanks for sharing your experiences...   Not gonna lie, it's kind of creepy thinking about them watching me sleep.  I'm pretty sure I'll be taking my night med because I'm sure I won't be sleeping well without it.
