Had my first dumping experience

Hi all!!

First of all let me preface by saying that I am out of town on business.  There are food breaks in between workshops but they are filled with sugary snacks or pastas filled with cream sauces - absolutely no protein.  Last night I decided to come back to my room and order a bunless turkey burger from room service.  I got down about 3 or 4 bites and I was in instant pain.  After suffering for about 30 minutes with this horrific pain in my chest/pouch, the vomitting started.  This went on for about 10 minutes.  Ironically enough I felt better after it was all over.  That being said, I now know that it is something that I don't EVER want to experience again!

Does anyone have any tips on how to eat when I'm out of town?  I'm four weeks post op (tomorrow).  I brought some protein shakes and mixes with me but I also want to be a part of the conference and enjoy the social networking hours.  I checked to see if any of the restaurants in the hotel have any Greek or non fat yogurt - nothing.  The sundries store doesn't have any cheese sticks either.  Anyone have any suggestions?

How about eggs? Everyone has them, right? An omelette with cheese and some veggies?

That's where I get into trouble as well.  I don't like eggs or fish.  I've tried them both since my surgery and they were still as distasteful to me as they were pre-op.

Is there a grocery store or a Target Greatland/SuperWalMart nearby? You can always swing by there, and grab what you need. Yogurt, cheese sticks, etc. Also, you can ask the hotel if they have a small refrigerator for your room(if it doesn't already have one).

Many restaurants have cottage cheese. I handle soup the best since my surgery.
Chili would be another thing.
Sliced turkey or ham with sliced cheese.

I'd consider bring your own food in a cooler. Most hotel rooms have mini fridges in which to keep items cool.  Protein bars, dried edamame, soy nuts, dried peas, beef jerky, low fat string cheese, etc.--lots of things you can bring with you.  Unless you can request foods cooked in a way you know won't cause you issues, I'd avoid eating there.  Or ask the hotel if a Target, Walmart or whatever store you like nearby where you typically buy some items you tolerate when at home.  A turkey burger with no bun has no carbs/sugar so would not have caused dumping, and what you describe isn't consistent with dumping symptoms (du,ping doesn't cause pouch pain -- the dumping reaction occurs in your intestine below the bypassed section -- and almost always includes rapid heart rate, lightheadedness or dizziness, flushing, etc.).  It sounds like the turkey burger just didn't agree with you.

Since I don't know what is on your food plan, I cannot really make any food suggestions, but you can still sip on a beverage and participate in the social networking.  I do it all the time!

I agree that it doesn't sound like a dumping episode as there's a lot more to it than just vomiting.

As far as food, I would grab a cab and go to a local grocery store and pick up some supplies -- cheese, turkey pepperoni, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, fruit, nuts, lunch meat.  If your room doesn't have a fridge, see if you can buy a styro cooler at the store and fill it with ice to keep your perishables safe.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the turkey burger.

As others have pointed out, this isn't dumping which is the action of undigested carb/fat hitting the small intestine - there is no way you are dumping if you are vomitting!!!!

Turkey burger is often dry and although it sounds like a good choice nutritionally, food that is too dry will make you vomit more often than not - you actually might have been better with a juicy beefburger - if that's on your plan!

When you are considering your choices, think moist, moist, moist!!!   Sauces, gravys etc will help most foods slip down a little easier if they are inherently dry!

Yeah when I have dumped in the past it wasn't painful and I didn't puke. Instead it felt like an anxiety attack accomanpied by MUST SLEEP NOW type thing. Sucks! But yeah the burger just may have been too dry.
