OMG y'all help me!
I have been going back to my old eating habits. Eating at night, grazing, and overeating. What should I do? Go back on liquid diet? Go on just shakes? Or what? Please someone tell me what to do. I've got to stop it now or I will gain it all back! I had surgery April 9, 2012. I don't know what to do and I'm scared.
You should go back to the meal plan you are supposed to be on right now. I'm guessing that includes solid food, not just shakes.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Go back to basics (NOT liquids... That just reinforces a dieting mentality and part of the problem now is that you are still fighting to try to develop that healthy eating mentality and habits). Focus on eating a measured amount of food, protein first at EVERY meal, NO snacking unless your plan calls for protein snacks (and make sure they are also measured portions and protein heavy), limited carbs (often want we snack and graze on is carbs, and carbs frequently just make people crave more carbs), lots of water between meals/snacks.
Stay out of the kitchen. Don't have unhealthy things in the house. Remind yourself of WHY you had surgery and remind yourself of where you came from (and therefore what will happen if you don't get the eating under control). I would also suggest seeking out a counselor to help you understand what is causing you to lose control and sabotage yourself.
It is good that you are seeking to get things under control sooner rather than later.

The vets are right. When I start thinking about other foods which I do quite often I have a dumb chant I say to myself "PRO-TEIN, PRO-TEIN, PRO-TEIN" It reminds me what I should be focused on.
I'm not sure when/ where you're tempted by bad foods so I'll just tell you what I'm tempted by and I'm sure you can relate to at least one or two...
Fast food: Usually tempted on my way home from work or school and I'm usually exhausted and hungry. I combat this by having a little snack in my car or purse. I know there are not many high protein snacks that don't need to be refrigerated but I use a Luna Bar you can also carry around a cheese stick for several hours. If I'm not starving I won't strongly desire fast food.
Candy, cake, sweets, donuts: I will admit to you I have some strange obsession with donuts ever since I've had surgery, I literally think about them at least 2 times a week. I have not given in but I'm usually tempted when I'm tired and at night! So I NEVER EVER EVER EVER keep any sort of sweets in my house. If I don't have them in my house the chances of me getting my butt out at night looking for candy is really slim. This is probably harder for people with families because I know other people in the family like to eat bad things. But really don't buy them at the store like ever. IF you have a husband or kids tell them to keep their stash away so you don't have to be tempted.
Grazing, I find it hard to graze because I'm always trying to drink something and I don't think it's really easy to graze on some chicken breast or lunch meat. Things like nuts which i know are allowed I never buy because I graze on them and well I honestly can't trust myself to eat only 12 almonds a day so I just don't eat almonds ever.
Eating at night is something I have an issue with so I save room in my meal plan for "4th meal" My plan says to eat between 5-6 meals, and I know that will never happen for me I basically eat (if I'm lucky) 4 meals and a snack. I save a reasonable amount of calories for 8-9 pm. I find it so much easier to not keep grazing if I'm full from a meal.
I still haven't mastered social situations like parties with buffets full of chips I'll let you know when I figure that one out. Although I have to say I have come a long way since I've started this whole WLS thing. I'm much more in tune with my body and my relationship with food as really improved.
Best advice is to not keep junk in the house and limit your carbs to like one non-fruit/ veg carb item per day. Drinking 4 shakes a day will make you lose weight but it won't teach you how to fight the deeper problems. It is really important to understand why you eat and to modify it.
I hope this helps. If not it was sorta cathartic for me.

IT is going to TAKE GREAT EFFORTS to do the things that you need to do! YOU HAVE TO WANT IT AND THE DESIRE TO DO THIS! This close to being out from your surgery, you will have to do what ever you can to get control. You are crying out here and you are in a great place! You however will have to want it bad enough to make the changes that I am sencing you will need to make! Contact your surgeons office or your nutritionist where ever they are located!
Are you journaling what you are eating? Why..? What..? When..? Have you done this in the past as far as journaling? You could go back to reveiw some of those. But all in all... YOU HAVE TO WANT THIS SURGERY TOOL TO WORK FOR YOU! It may be hard and the desire to self sooth... but find something else that is healthier for you to sooth your needs. Activities and maybe not even excersize. Somethings that you find you enjoy doing.
Follow eating plans... 3500 calories equal a pound and can be a loss of a pound.
If you are in here, you are aware of what you are doing. YOU HAVE TO BE STRONG NOW EVEN MORE THAN YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE TO BE. NO one will be able to do this for you!
Hang in there and keep moving and going in the direction with your WLS tool! You can do this!!
hugs,
Sherrie

OMG,
You are doing great to put this out there instead of just going at it secretly...since we know that our "secrets' end up as public viewing. And our shame and disgust wiht ourselves. You really should get out your original plans...measure measure measure and go PROTEIN!! you are probably filling up on carbs and those empty calories aren't serving you. You need to get rid of what s not serving your purpose (becoming a new you...a healthy you) anymore and keep only that which IS serving you.
You've come too far and worked too hard to let it go now...you can do it! Maybe make an appt with a psych again...go to support groups!! Do something...don't let it slip out of your hands! :)
