No straws?

I was told not to drink through a straw because it puts air in the pouch, but that seems to be the only way I can get all of my liquids in. I'm still just sipping small amounts but the straw makes it easier for me for some reason. Do any of you use straws? Is it going to mess something up?

I use straws all the time and no, it's not going to mess something up.  If you suck in too much air, you might get gas.  If that happens, then you probably don't want to use a straw.  Otherwise, there's no reason not to use one.

I started using straws a couple weeks post op because it was the only way to get liquids down and to bypass my overly-sensitive postop taste buds to get the protein in. Didn't give me much (more) gas and kept me from getting dehydrated.

I talked to my surgeon about this; cause I am not getting enough fluids in and she said to try it.....we talked about the possibility of the excess gas from it; but it's better than me having to get dehydrated and a straw doesn't give me anymore gas than without it. But I can get more fluids in.

at first I heard that too and avoided it. However now I find I get more of my fluids in when using a straw.  As time goes on, its easier for me to drink more too, so that I am relieved about.  I still miss guzzling water, but oh well.

I was told that too and it's a shame b/c I would have gotten much more liquids in if I hadn't been told that.  I've not had any issues since I started using them again.  Good luck with your recovery!
