We were discussing protein today at work ( even though they don't know I had surgery). One girl who has a personal trainer said that if you want to lose 100 pounds you should be eating 100 grams of protein a day. I so hope this isn't true because I will never make it. I am 1 month out and have a hard time trying to get 45- 60 in.

I think the trainer is oversimplifying his/her answer. There are other factors to consider when calculating protein needs, such as activity level, weight, etc.

Don't worry about getting in 100g of protein at a month out from surgery. Just focus on your plan, and go from there.

You will have an easier time getting in protein as you go along. At one month out, most of us couldn't get it all in. It gets easier with time, so don't worry.

The goal is generally 1g of protein per kilo (2.2#) of ideal weight (not current weight!) ...   30g in 30 days, 60g in 60 days and 90g in 90 days.   You are doing better than expected!

Do the best you can and I think 100 grams is on the very high side.

I was told 60-80g a day for the rest of my life. I was getting in maybe 30g a day at one month out. Its totally normal. As time goes by and you can introduce more protein foods into your diet it'll get easier. On a normal day for me, at almost 9 months out, I get about 70g in. On a really good day its just over 80. I don't know anyone who can get in 100 and there really is no need for it, its excessive in my opinion. It just means more calories, fat, etc. Just focus on getting in what you can right now and don't get discouraged. Stick to your plan and you'll do fine.

I had a hard time getting in 45 early on also. No problems now!

Keep in mind she hasn't had WLS either.

Ha - when i first started I was lucky to get in 30 grams of protein in a day. Now I get in a 62-72 gram protein a day via a shake with milk and then added protein from my food. I probably average about 90 grams a day.  My nutritionist and doctor say that even if some day's I'm a little higher and some days I'm a little lower in the week it averages out.

Also if the person is working out a lot and weight lifting you need the protein to repair muscles - hence why the trainer is saying she needs a 100 g of protein. For an average person that isn't working out and watches what they eat that would be too high as you can actually gain weight if you aren't working out and eating that much protein. (Not us of course cause our system is different).

Don't stress to much right now - goal is get in your protein and water and go from there.

We are totally different then the average person - Just last night I was trying to explain to my family why I'm not supposed to drink water and they don't believe me.  I'm like seriously...I'm not wired the same as you! lol
