antibiotics!
Well, I've been through an absolute nightmare the last two weeks!
I was attacked by my foster dog (a neopolitian mastiff) 2 weeks ago today. The dog attacked my leg after being unable to reach my own dog and bit down and wouldn't let go. He even shook my leg. I have 7 serious wounds - 2 all the way down to the bone. The pain of that was bad enough, but I had to go on antibiotics for the possible infection.
Antibiotics killed my stomach - over a week I was on bactrim, leavaquin, and augmentin. I couldn't keep the antibiotics down nor could I keep food or water down - of any sort. So I was hospitalized on Thanksgiving until Tuesday for IV antibiotics.
I've been out of the hospital since Tuesday and now am on leavaquin and clindamycin. I'm having a horrible time with the antibiotics and my new tummy (I'm only 2 months out from RNY!). The Infectious Disease doctor that I saw doesn't seem to understand the RNY stomach and thinks I'm silly that I feel so sick -- and stupid me went to the closest hospital rather than my surgery hospital (only 15 min further).
My question is this... what do people do with antibiotics and the pouch? Do you ever find that they get along? I'm really struggling to even ge****er in - let alone any food! I've been trying to get at least 1 protein drink in a day, but even that's a struggle.
I see the Infectious Disease Doc again on Monday. The BEST thing I could have done is check into the hospital where I was able to get nearly 24 hour IV antibiotics that didn't bother my pouch. My leg looks like the majority (if not all) of the infection has cleared up - so I'm trying as hard as I can to get all my antibiotics in (3 times a day for 1, just once a day for the other). Most days I can't get all the doses down - I either throw them right back up or just can't even get it down. But my leg is looking better - just some really ugly scars forming.
DizzyLizzy, so sorry for your troubles. Both of my pooches are rescue dogs and I know how mercurial they can be. You never know what has been done to them or how they will react. I am so sorry to hear how your foster attacked you!
I think antibiotics will get easier the further out you get. I'm about four months out and was on antibiotics for nearly the entire month of October for, what turned out to be, an antibiotic resistant strain of e. coli. It started as a bladder infection after I was going to the gym for a few weeks. (The doc thinks it was from not washing my hands BEFORE I used the bathroom there. Too many dirty hands on the equipment!) Now I am the Purell queen at the gym!
AI digress. Try taking the pill then eating something right away...even if it is only a little of something. That might help settle your pouch down.
Feel better soon!
Karen
I'm so sorry! What a horrible experience. The one thing I want to say is keep up on your protein! Now, this isn't for the reason you think but it's to help the antibiotics work. You need to have adequate protein in the body to have the right balance in the blood to allow the antibiotics to get absorbed. This is one of those things that no one ever talks about- even our doctors. However, the protein is necessary to help transport the antibiotics which is one reason why nutrition is such a huge issue for any patient with an infection. Again, this isn't really discussed unless you're sick enough to be in the hospital but we're at increased risk due to our malabsorption issues. Also, there have been some studies that show that we don't absorb certain antibiotics as well as those with intact stomachs. So, again we're at a bit of a deficit. Just do your best, take care of yourself and get whatever sort of protein in that you can, try to rest, remember you'll get better eventually...and I do hope you feel better soon!!! Take care. :)
