Tried some new foods
Today, I had way over my protein intake, so I decided to go with something that I LOVED presurgery...salad! I had some mixed greens, carrots, mushrooms and a small amount of tuna mixed with mustard and tiny bit of lite Miracle Whip. OMGoodness, it was so good and it stayed down without any problems! I am so happy that I can eat salad. Just hope my pouch doesn't change it's mind somewhere along the way.
The other day, I went to an Asian grocery store to get supplies to make riceless sushi. While I was there, I came upon a Knorr's Hot and Sour soup mix packet. So, I decided to try and make a combination of Hot and Sour with a sort of Miso-type soup. This morning, I made the mix as directed with an egg, then I added cubed firm tofu and some sushi nori (seaweed sheets) cut into squares. It was SOOO delicious. I could drink the broth and then eat the rest.
At the store, I also found some Korean Roasted Seaweed. It is also very tasty. It's crunchy, a bit like a chip, but has only 10 calories in a serving (individual package), only 1 gm protein, 0.8gm fat, 1gm carb and 25mg sodium, some vitamin A, C and iron...not really much nutritional value, but tastes good. I'm a salty, crunchy lover, so this works? Better than what I'd really love to have...Lay's plain potato chips...
I also tried peanut butter and boy, oh boy was it good! I'm going to look into the PB2 to add to different foods.
Seems that the only thing that I cannot tolerate with this new pouch is mint. I've tried to chew peppermint, spearmint and some other cool mint flavored gum and it makes me so nauseous. I bit a piece of sugar free candy cane-type of candy and it did the same. Before surgery, mint was something that I enjoyed. :( But, if it's the only thing that I have a problem with...I consider myself lucky!
I am surprised about the soup. Not that it didn't bother you, but that it tasted good! I bought a packet, followed the directions, and it was nothing AT ALL like the hot and sour soup I have ever had at any Chinese restaurant. I took a couple of sips and threw the entire thing out! Same thing happened with a different brand. It was even worse!

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

I don't think it would have tasted like much of anything without the tofu and nori. It had more of a seafood/fishy flavor than a hot and sour. More like a Miso soup with a bit thicker broth.
I LOVE hot and sour from Chinese restaurants and thought it would taste like that, but it was nothing like it.

Isn't it interesting that our pouches can be so different? Mine couldn't handle salads unless it was shredded iceberg lettuce. Mint is wonderful for me. In fact, I drink that Metromin****er every week. I use peppermint sugar free Tornani syrup in my coffee. I wonder what causes these differences where one person gets sick on something and another person it is just fine.
It is interesting. I read some of the foods that people can't tolerate after surgery and thank God that I have no problem with them...so far! If I couldn't tolerate turkey, I think I'd go crazy. I LOVE turkey...always have. It's my "go to" food, just sliced oven baked turkey. Also, Crystal Light lemonade is my soda replacement and if I couldn't tolerate that, I don't know what I'd drink.

It's not the mint, its the Xorbitol (sp) sugar alcohol content which is causing your nausea.
You know, Steve, I thought about that. But, I can chew all other flavors of the gum with the same ingredient and I'm ok with them. Before I discovered the mint problem, I had gone to Starbucks for their BOGO special and ordered the only "holiday" flavor that was sugar free...the mocha peppermint one. I was so nauseous and thought it was from too much caffeine, as I've cut back to just one small cup a day and this was waaay too much caffeine to finish. I've tried SF mint syrup in the same brand of all my other syrups. It's the mint. I'm sad, but not devastated about it. I just need to find another way to mask garlic!

It's weird but I can tolerate them. At least in the form of Atkin's protein bars. I've had ones that go from 9 grams to 11 grams with no problem. I also can have Dreyer's slow churned no sugar added butter pecan ice cream (6 grams sugar alcohol in 1 cup). I don't think I've gone over 15 grams in one episode but I don't think I want that much anyway. Need to save room for other food like protein.
