Weight gain after WLS...really???

I am 6 wks. post op.  I weighed 196.4 for about two weeks.  Then, yesterday I weighed in at 201.2 and today 202.6.  Why the weight gain when I'm weighing the same time and in the same clothes everyday.  I exercise 4-5x's/wk. for 30-45.  I've increased my distance in that time period so, I'm actually doing more, but should I be doing more or in other words, are my workouts intense enough?  My blood pressure has also been around 183 over 104 and my PCP says that everything is ok, no concerns about fluid gain because there's no apparent edema or fluid in my legs or feet--really???? It takes about three hours for my blood pressure medication to kick in, my PCP says this is odd ( She's the PCP but can't explain it???).  I exercise and it comes down as low as 120 over 79.  Anyone has any idea what is going on?

Sounds like you're retaining water.  To gain five pounds, you'd need to eat about 17,500 calories MORE than you burned.  I'm guessing there is no chance you ate that much, right?

183/104 is high for blood pressure, as I'm sure you know.

I have to be retaining water but my PCP doesn't see it.  At my last visit, I explained that I was on fluid pills before surgery.  She commented that if the surgeon took me off of them then it was done for a reason but she's not gave me a real explanation.  I eat about 40g of protein a day, that's barely enough to live so there is no way that I've had 17, 500 calories.  I also exercise until I break a sweat because I'm still trying to gain my strength. But what could I be doing wrong?

Why don't you give your surgeon a call?  I'm sure he did take you off the fluid pills for a reason, but now that you're retaining a lot of water, he may need to put you back on them for a while.

In the meantime, really limit your salt intake and drink as much as you possibly can.  I  know it sounds odd, but fluid pushes fluid.  Drinking more will help you lose the water you're retaining.  But call your surgeon, too.

I will discuss this with my surgeon when I see him today. I contacted my PCP to try to get a referral for a cardiologist and they wouldn't give me one, they just wanted to see me again and they have seen me for the same symptoms two Fridays in a row and have no answer, just I'm not retaining fluid in my legs, feet or hands.  I swear some health care providers just don't get it or maybe they do.

Saw my surgeon yesterday and he put me back on my fluid and blood pressure pill until I'm further along.  This morning I was already down 2lbs.  The surgeon and NUT agree that I'm getting enuff protein, but at about four weeks some patients stall then at six weeks the weight comes flying off.  It was already established during my last hospital visit that I'm recovering more slowly than some--I am six weeks out but my body is responding like four weeks, regardless, I'm so happy to be back on track.

My surgeon also had a hard time believing my PCP's actions.  He was appalled that my PCP had seen me twice and done nothing about my elevated blood pressure, I thought it was really nice of my surgeon to write me a script for the fluid and blood pressure and  tell me to call if I have any problems that I'm not in this alone despite having a less than adequate PCP.  As of yet, I still have not received a referral for a Cardiologist from my PCP.  Next on my agenda--find me another PCP.

Thnx everyone for your help.

If your insurance plan allows you to choose specialty MDs without your PCP referral, you probably should make an appointment to see a cardiologist about your blood pressure.  If you need a referral, just tell your PCP that you want to see a specialist about your heart/blood pressure.  If your PCP refuses to give a referral, call your insurance company and talk with one of their nurses...explain the situation and tell them that you would feel better if you were to see a specialist.  Fluid doesn't always show in your legs or feet.

You're probably not eating enough for the excersize you're doing. 40g of protien isn't enough. You'll put your body into starvation mode that way. You need to increase your protien

  • Pick up your scale.
  • Head to the window.
  • Throw it - as HARD as you can.
  • You'll instantly lose about five pounds.
