use of tumeric as an alternative to NSAIDS

I just wanted to mention that I've been taking tumeric capsules twice a day for about a month now in an attempt to help my back pain.  Tumeric is supposed to have natural anti-inflammatory properties and to be a safe alternative to NSAIDS.  Keep in mind it's not something that works like Advil or Motrin, you can't take it when you have a headache and have it relieve the pain in 20 minutes.  It's supposed to take a couple weeks to start to have an effect and is supposed to be useful for chronic inflammation.  That would make it a good option for people with conditions like arthritis.

Well, I've been taking it for about a month, and while I still have back problems, my back is much better.  I think that is due in part to having my service dog now, so I do a lot less bending and lifting.  But I suspect the tumeric is helping, as well.  Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else wanted to give it a try.

Hey, I will try anything that might help the swelling in my knees (especially now that winter has truly arrived in Ohio)!  Did you have to go to a health food store to find it?

I ordered it from drugstore.com.  Some brands are really expensive but they Nature's bounty - I think that's the one - one sale at a reasonable price currently.  I don't know if CVS or someplace like that would have it or not.

Ummmm, I take that back. I won't be trying it. I found this caveat on the University of Maryland Medical Center website under possible interactions.

Diabetes Medications -- Turmeric may make the effects of these drugs stronger, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Ah.  Yeah, everybody should do their research before using herbal supplements.

I used that for a while, but stopped before I saw any improvement. Thanks for the reminder. Turmeric also supposedly helps indigestion, infections, and helps prevent blood clots. It can give you a sunless tan, too.

from U. of Maryland Medical Center:

The following are doses recommended for adults:

  • Cut root: 1.5 - 3 g per day
  • Dried, powdered root: 1 - 3 g per day
  • Standardized powder (curcumin): 400 - 600 mg, 3 times per day
  • Fluid extract (1:1) 30 - 90 drops a day
  • Tincture (1:2): 15 - 30 drops, 4 times per day

Rats. Looks like it is out for me, too, especially after my two coumadin-related bleeding incidents:

Blood-thinning Medications -- Turmeric may make the effects of these drugs stronger, raising the risk of bleeding. Blood-thinners include warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), and aspirin, among others.

I take a little right out of the spice jar when I am cooking a couple of times a week. I do it for its anti cancer effects.
