Living alone after surgery

I am waiting to be scheduled for surgery and was just wondering......I live alone, my parents live two doors down from me. My mom had agreed to help me out after surgery, but we recently found out that my grandmother who is 85 has cancer. My mom now has to take her everyday to the doctor for 4-12 weeks. I do not want to put my surgery off if I don't have to!! Will I be able to stay at home alone after surgery? My sisters have volunteered to take turns checking on me but both of them work during the day. My grandmother and I have talked and she said do not put my surgery off! Am I being selfish should I just hold off on me once again? Or can I take care of myself after surgery?

Hello,

I had my surgery the 21st of Dec. I was in the hospital 2 days and then home. I also live alone and my experience alone was fine. There was not much that anybody could do for me. I don't think you are being selfish at all. From my experience I think you will be fine. I hope this helps :)

Good Luck,

Thank you LaLa. I told my dad today that they wouldn't have to worry about me and he gave me the worst look. I had surgery on my back a couple years ago and was very needy afterwards. I kinda feel bad because I wanna still have my surgery asap. I always worry about everyone else but myself.

Back surgery is VERY different than a lap RNY.  MUCH more debilitating. You will be fine.

I totally agree, back surgery for me was THE WORST surgery I've had to date and I have had a few!

I would have been fine by myself after surgery. I did need a ride home, though.

I have a single buddy who had surgery and she just had a few people she could call if she needed anything. She recovered just fine.

I fight badgers with spoons.

You will need a ride from the hospital, but if you are prepared drink/meds-wise beforehand, you should be fine. I know I would have been just fine. I was home 2.5 days with my mom, then she lwft and I was home alone with my 5-year old. Tiring? Yes. Doable? Yes.

Noftessa,
My parents will both be there for the surgery and will be able to bring me home afterwards. I was hoping to have it done before my daughter left to go back to school but she leaves in the 15th so that won't happen. I'll just make sure that I am prepared to be home alone.

Thanks

I didn't need anyone after I had surgery, but everyone is different. I think that if you have  sisters that can check in on you, you should be fine. I drove myself to my 10 day post op visit with my surgeon and was out doing errands before that.
