Anything happen in your hospital stay you wish you knew about?

So I hate the whole drain and IV thing I thought maybe they would come out soon after surgery. I asked the Dr said before you walk out the door I undo everything no sooner....ugh.

I heard someone else here mention they were surprised they were asked to roll from the OR bed to the regular bed....I am scared of that and the pain. Did you have to do that?

What surprised you on your stay? I go tomorrow am so trying to make sure I am as prepared as can be. They went over everything with me and I am ok with the catherer until I am walking once I am up and moving that thing is OUT! I asked about being on a vent they said that is soooooo rare and not to worry about it since I have never had complications waking up from surgery but they did say don't be surprised if you wake up and we have our CPAP machine on you. Did any of you wake up with it on?

Thanks,

Michelle

They made me sleep with these leg squeezing things, that made me sooo hot. On the morning of being discharged I said, I'll be happy to be rid of these, they make me so hot, and the nurse said, oh you should have told me they were making you hot, they have a built in cooling function! It only I knew!

I had my RNY march 5 and the day of surgery and until the next evening then they took off the IV. I didn't have a cathiter. I didn't have to use my Cpap after I woke up. The pain was intense the first day or so then eased as time went on. I walked up and down the halls to help the soreness. The one thing I found helpful was the elastic belly band. It helps things to not jiggle. Good luck and prayers.

My surgery was on 2/28. I wished that I had used the incentive spirometer-that thing you use to practice deep breathing exercises. I was way too lax about it and ended.up getting pneumonia and had to be readmitted into the hospital. So be sure to use yours! Good luck! Also-I would take a light robe that you can throw around your shoulders for when you are walking laps. You will have ur iv and iv pole so that makes it awkward but you can just put the robe on your shoulders to cover up ur behind while u are out and about. Pam

I only had to use my CPAP at night and the only thing that bothered me was the drain tube. It was like having a stich in my side and it bothered me when I breathed deeply. I got the drain and IV out the day I left the hospital.

I also had an analgestic pain device in my tummy that had a little bag that was attached to it with the medicine in it. It was kind of a pain when I walked but it didn't hurt while it was in or when it was taken out.

I got my catherer out the day after surgery....they took it out that morning and I had till mid day to use the potty or they would put it back in.

Which hospital are you having your surgery in? I had it at Rex and they did not have me move into my regular bed...they rolled me upstairs on the bed I was in in the recovery room.

I will be thinking good thoughts for you and please private message me if you need anything!!

The hospital I went to had special hover pads... not sure what they are really called. Anyway, it is under you on the bed. They inflate it and then slide you over into the surgical table effortlessly! I was amazed! Very pleasant surprise.
No catheters or drains!

The bed was covered in plastic which made the bed HOT. I slept in the chair both nites I was there.
