I need suggestions on how to abide my protein shakes. Ever since surgery the thought of them makes me want to hurl! I have added sugar free syrups but they are making me gag. Any tips or suggestions? I am not getting in my protein at all. I have a tub of the nectar chocolate truffle and the vanilla bean torte. I liked them preop now they seem like my worst enemies. HELP!!

Mine made me so sick too. I was supposed to use ENS Celebrate - 25 protein plus all vitamins and minerals for one daily dose. The flavor was vanilla cake batter and it was sickeningly sweet to me after surgery. It called for 8 oz. water/2scoops. I doubled the water so I put 2 scoops in 16 oz. water with just a teaspoon of instant coffee crystals. The coffee cuts the sick sweet Taste. Sometimes I toss in 3 or 4 ice cubes for more dilution. Now I drink one every morning. 16 oz. toward my fluid intake also. I am glad I can now tolerate the stuff as it was $57.00/tub and I have TWO TUBS.

Just FYI- ENS does NOT have all the vitamins and minerals you need for the day in one dose.  One dose is equivalent to one multivitamin plus 500 mg calcium citrate.  You need two multivitamins a day, so that would be two doses of ENS.  However, you need 1500 to 2000 mg calcium citrate, so you'd still need one or two more doses of that.  You also still need iron and B12.

Kelly:

i know all that.  Perhaps I was not clear in my wording.  I said ENS has what we need for one daily dose but we need two of the multi and three of the calcium.  Therefore I  start the day with one daily dose in the ENS, take a creamy bite at noon, and take another ENS in the pm if I need it for the protein.  If I have met my protein needs for the day I then take a chewable multi and a chewable calcium.  Then at bedtime I take the iron chewable and the b12 sublingual.  So that is my schedule.  No ENS does not meet the daily need in just one shake.  I did not intend to imply that.  Sorry for your confusion.

I make a shake with nectar fuzzy navel, frozen banana and water. It is a nice change from sweet chocolate or vanilla. I still cant drink those flavors. Sometimes I add 1/4 cup greek yogurt to it as well. More protein and taste so good.

Try sugar free tang in the vanilla and try peanut butter in the chocolate. My dr just told me that yesterday when I complained mine all taste like metal. Plus you can get some sugar free coffee creamer put it in them to add flavor. I mix mine with ice sf creamer and a scoop of chocolate. It made it better.

It's hard after surgery since most of the time your tastes will change. Here's what worked for me.
Use sf.carnation instant breakfast mixed with milk of choice. Add a bit of protein to that.
Add cottage cheese to your shake and blend well...cuts some of the sweetness.
Mix with coffee and make and 'iced latte or mocha' I still do that a lot
Add a few frozen berries in. Low cal and berries are low carb
Nut butter or pb2 added in
Sf cheesecake pudding mix (1 tbsp is 25 cal) or any pudding mix
Mix into hot tea, hot chocolate, chai, etc make a slurry with water or milk then mix in your hot liquid so it doesn't clump
Extracts in the baking isle. Root beer, raspberry, orange...whatever you like.
Just a few ideas to get you started. Hope they help a bit!

I got very grossed out by them as well for a long time until a fellow bypasser who commented on my blog told me about this great combo which combines my protein shake with coffee. I have the recipe HERE.

I literally drink this now everyday and it tastes sooo good - I can have it hot or cold and it is a total of 40.5 grams of protein. It takes me awhile to drink, but I ABSOLUTELY love it. Actually I am enjoying one right now - lol

Look for some of the non-dairy type shakes.  Isopure Plus is a Koolaid like drink that I was able to get down when I got  sick of the too sweet dairy drinks,  it comes in grape or punch.  I think what makes it less pukey is that it doesn't smell like so many of the protein drinks.

I also got to the point that just the thought of a protein drink would make me gag.  And Unjury, which a lot of people on this forum love, was the absolute worst.  I just gave away two almost full tubs of it.

Good luck.  I know exactly what you are going through.
