How long after surgery before you can...Smoke marijuana?

I can't answer the question because I don't take drugs but realistically I would think smoking weed on occasion to relax has to be better then going back to smoking cigarettes which most definitely is linked to ulcer formation yet people still do it which still shocks me.  I can't understand how people quit to have life saving surgery and restart afterwards wtf. Weed can form ulcers also but if its just once in awhile I doubt its a huge deal, personally I think alcohol  is a much worse drug then weed.  I have witnessed people who have smoked weed and were just relaxed yet fully functional and the same people drink and not be able to stand up.

Let me just say tht I live in Los Angeles. Medical marijuana is everywhere here. Even though I don't partake in it, I don't judge.

With that said my surgeon won't do this surgery on anyone who smokes weed. You need to be smoke free for at least 3 months before he will work with you. I never got into the details after about why you cannot continue the habit, but I think he said it was because you become dehydrated more easily, and the munches is an emotional appetite. Both of those things you don't want.

Sorry I could not be more help!

Hi kikidoll,
Love your question
I think you'll have to decide at 3 months out. Maybe there's some research out there...
I am posting just to let you know in case you don't that there are several health products that help in relaxation. I like l-theanine...comes from green tea...I take it in a capsule. Also, my son struggles with anxiety, recently quit smoking pot and he drinks sleepytime tea. Says it helps him to relax. There is also valerian root..but can upset the stomach..but is very effective.
Just some ideas until you hit the there month mark. I have no idea how l-theanine or sleepytime tea affects a modified stomach/ digestive system.
Good luck!

That sleepy time tea or tension tamer tea is fabulous for relaxing you! I've never been a user but I don't judge either. Personally, I have watched my ex husband go down the meth road and damn near kill himself and I have watched my son smoke pot (well not literally) and function perfectly fine in life. I don't condone it and he knows it but I also think there are worse things he could do. I have terrible anxiety tho and I use hot tea, hot baths, and sometimes Ativan. Sorry can't be of more help.

I am worried about you. You said you are a person on the edge and worry about things you can't control, and weed helps you enjoy life a little bit more. Well isn't life still there after you smoke. This journey is about dealing with life. No my addiction was not weed but it was food and guess what even though I had surgery food is still there. Food is what I used to deal with life issues. It is not normal to feel on edge all the time. I had to learn not to worry about things I can't control. I had to learn to deal with the problem head on and face it not dwell on it until it eat me alive or I ate myself to death. And believe me now that I learned to deal with life with out the crutch of food I am much happier, sleep a lot better, and have a lot less stress. Now I deal with stress by being active and working out. Food weed drugs drinking smoking and others its all the same addiction just some worse then others. Go ahead say I don't understand because I don't smoke weed and maybe i don't . But i do understand that anything we use as a crutch to deal with life instead of just dealing with life is not good for us .

First of all, I am by no means addicted to smoking weed.  I haven't had any since mid November, and in my life I have gone through large stretches where I didn't smoke for years.  While I appreciate the concern, smoking for me is not an escape from life.  Everyone has something they do to unwind, unfortunately for me, taking baths, a glass of wine or reading a book just doesn't do it for me.

Furthermore, I am actually an extremely happy, well adjusted individual.  I have a great life and a good head on my shoulders.  I have gone through periods in my life that were obviously not this way as we all do...and when I felt the need to seek counseling I absolutely did and I was better off for it.  That being said, I am most definitely not in need of counseling at this point in my life journey.  If I come to a point where I need it again, I won't hesitate to seek some ones help.  This isn't a crutch or an addiction, it just just an indulgence that I would like to partake in sometimes, with friends, when the situation presents itself.  I do appreciate your concern, though, thank you for looking out.

LOL  I for one have been wondering the SAME thing.  Im glad you asked and sorry (grossly bound to happen) that you got "the talk" about how terrible it and you are! lolol Anyways....so after all that reading, what is the conclusion? LOL . Yes i get it, eating it, vaporizer yaddayadda....but the original question. can u smoke it......is a good one.  So now i wonder, is it the nicotine or the "smoke" itself that causes ulcers

Thanks for asking this question. I have recently found out I'm covered by insurance, now I'm waiting to get cleared by drs. It's a good thing I searched for this because yesterday was my last day smoking. I don't want anything to mess up getting my surgery. I was also wondering if using a vaporizer would help since you won't be getting the smoke in. I have no problem with quitting but I was also curious if I would ever be able to enjoy weed again.

@Miamos, would you say the same thing to a person who had to take anti-anxiety medications? Many of which can be very harsh on the body in the long term...I am not against anyone seeking counseling when needed, but OP sounds like she is just looking to indulge occasionally to wind down. Some people are just wired differently and everyday "normal" things can cause them to feel stress more than others. I have never smoked marijuana before so I cannot speak for the effects but the fact that it is often prescribed for such things where it is legal medicinally says something...

OP - I think you just need to speak to your surgeon here because ultimately they have your health history on file. Ask them if cooking it into food is a healthier/safer option if that would be better.

I am not saying your anxiety is not real and it is not hard to overcome,it will always be there. I just hope you find maybe a better way to deal with it.
