I am not sure if there is Lyme disease in your state but those swollen joints and shooting pains are a symptom.  I live in Connecticut so you would think everything was Lyme and not the flu, my son was misdiagnosed with the flu, I finally demanded they do  a Lyme teeter, which did come back positive.  He did 5 weeks of antibiotics.  It might not apply in your state though.
