Do you use a pre workout supplement?
Not during, but my trainer always make sure I eat something protein heavy before my workout, and within 30mins after my workouts. I usually have a 1-egg omelet with cheese before or a protein shake, and after will have a protein snack, usually dry roasted edamame. During my workouts I drink water or a Sobe Lifewater, etc. I always have coffee in the morning as well just to perk up a bit. But doing the protein before and after is the best thing you can do.
Yeah I also make sure I have a protein shake after I workout. I often eat something heavy protein or have a shake within an hour or two before my workout

A middle aged over the hump and over what "I'm suppose to do" woman, with the wild spirit and a nasty case of depression and anxiety!
Not really. I have a protein shake for breakfast which I usually drink on my way to the gym. I do one hour of cardio and then 1 hour of weights or strength training. Afterwards I usually have my morning snack or early lunch depending on the time. I still do protein first on all snacks/meals. According to my trainer, if you have done heavy weights than you can do a protein shake afterwards, but it is important to do it within an hour for the best benefit. Carbs should be before a workout, but I don't do well with carbs.
IMO, it really depends on how intense your workout is. If I were training for a marathon I would do things differently. I am also much farther out than you and can eat more at one time. I don't want to waste extra calories by snacking during my workout. I have never added extra calories to account for my workouts. It is important to make sure you have eaten a decent meal/snack before you workout. (with in an hour or so.) It is not good to go into a workout without proper fuel.
Before long runs (>1 hr), I eat breakfast: anything from just a protein shake to greek yogurt or eggs and within 30 min of running I have another protein shake for recovery. I usually drink a cup of coffee 2 hrs before running - both for the extra energy and for the *ahem* potty-related side effects.... Nothing worse than running with a full colon..
