Unfair advantage?

Okay, so a weird question here. I am about 3 1/2 months post RNY.  Today, my workplace announced a weight loss challenge. You pay $10 to enter, the employer matches half of all the entry fees and then the winners split the pool.

So, as I was printing the email, I started thinking, would it be fair for me to enter? Obviously those who say yes, can say the surgery makes a win "easy". But on the other hand, I could eat total crap the whole time and lose.

So, should I enter?

Thanks!

I think it would be an unfair advantage.  I know we still have to work to lose weight after WLS, but it is a lot easier to stick to small portions when your stomach is the size of a egg instead of a football.

I think it would be unfair.  While it is hard work in the long run, the weight does come off fairly quickly for us.  Also, if any of your co-workers know about your surgery (or suspect) they will probably not like it.

To me, yes, you would have a HUGE unfair advantage.  How would you feel if you joined it as someone who had not had surgery, worked hard to limit your food (while managing your hunger) and exercise and then found out that someone else who joined (and may have "won") had surgery when -- as you said -- they would lose weight without doing a damn thing (which pretty much defines an unfair advantage to me!)?  I would be seriously pissed off at that person, as I think most people would be.

Yes, you would have an unfair advantage. I think the challenge should not allow anyone less than 2 or 3 years out to join. I have heard of some workplace competitions that never allow weight loss patients to join in, but I think past 2 or 3 years we lose at a normal rate so to me it would be fair then.

I think you'd just be asking for problems with your co-workers. If you won (which you probably would, since in the beginning it is much easier to lose weight than before the surgery).... I would bet that most people would be very resentful that you won because they would know you had an advantage

Though I don't think of it as truly "unfair"- I think you would be inviting trouble by joining in.  Do you coworkers know about your surgery? If they do, and have a healthy sense of humor, maybe you could start a side competition- "Beat the guy/gal with WLS".  That way you could participate and help to encourage them...

Yikes, in my opinion, it's unfair on so many levels.  Be a cheerleader for the participants.  You will be a winner in the end - trust me!
