Had my 1st appt with surgeon today.  I was told that my insurance will not approve the VSG, but will approve Gastric Bypass.  Anyone else switched from VSG to RNY?  Regrets?

VSG wasn't ffered when I had my WLS, it was RNY or Lap Band and I went with RNY.  I couldn't be happier.  Ten years out and still at 136lbs.

For me I would have never considered a restriction only surgery.

RNY on 09/29/14

I originally wanted a VSG but due to medical condition surgeon thought it was safer to fo RNY. No regrets!

I understand the feeling you are having... RNY scared me.  The good thing is this, RNY can be reversed if there are major complications.  VSG is forever, no going back if something goes wrong.  My insurance only covered bypass types of surgery.  Its been since April that I have been doing the prerequisite stuff.  I now have a date for my RNY of Dec 4th.  I am so nervous, scared, excited, hopeful... all at once.  I wish you the best!

Like Chili, I would never accept a sleeve.  I needed the RNY with its malabsorption to get the weight off.  I do not have enough self control for a sleeve.

RNY on 01/21/13

It's unfortunate insurance won't cover both since they have comparable outcomes.

My insurance was the same... They would only approve RNY.  I was on the fence about which one to get but then when one wasn't an option, it became an easy decision.  I had surgery on Sept 29 and I don't have any regrets so far :)

Is rny the same as lap band

Not at all. You couldn't pay me to get a lapband. I know there are a few successful lap banders on this board, but the ones I have met in real life had tons of issues and then needed to have RNY or VSG afterwards..
