Skin removal

I have a lot of skin that hangs low on my stomach after weight loss one day would like to get something done. I'm not sure what skin removal surgeries Medicare and medicaid pay for. I have a lot more loose skin everywhere especially my thighs but don't think they help with that. Does anyone know what surgery I could get that is covered from what I have? Thanks

Insurances do not pay if it is considered cosmetic.  If the skin is causing rashes and sores, then you need to document ea*****ident with a doctor.  They may pay based on the problems caused by the loose skin.

Sores and rashes need to be documented - and if you are written a prescription - you need to get it filled and use it ... and then if it doesn't get better get it filled again. They need to see that you are trying to treat it.

If the extra skin causes back pain - that can also be a factor.  Document.

I had to pay out of pocket for mine, but I certainly would have liked insurance to pay!

I hope no one else is in this club, but just in case.... I had breast cancer in 1997 and a lumpectomy. Now that I have lost some weight, my breasts are considerably different sizes. The surgeon said that they probably removed some not fat tissue, so loosing the fat developed different sizes. Anyway....he pointed out that if I choose, I can probably have plastic surgery covered for breast reconstruction and then get a package deal for other issues. Interesting potential option.

Happy rest of Thanksgiving.

You most definitely will qualify for breast reconstruction and augmentation of the other breast so both are alike.  Good luck!

If the excess hanging skin from your lower abdomen causes sores, etc., Medicare will pay for a panniculectomy.

I heard, someone let me know if this is incorrect, that Medicare or ins will only pay for a basic panniculectomy, and that if you want a better cosmetic outcome, you will pay an additional fee.

That is true. They will pay for skin removal of the panni,,but not the tummy tuck/muscle tightening, etc. But, since they are paying for the hospital, anesthesia, etc, you can usually get other things added on for less money out of pocket, if you can afford it.

I have no first hand knowledge, just passing along what others have experienced.

Yes, that is sometimes the case, but people should be aware that some plastic surgeons aren't willing to do that because it is difficult for them to bill insurance for just the OR time, anesthesiologist time, meds/supplies, etc. required for what insurance covers but then bill you for the additional time, expenses, supplies.

It really depends on the surgeon and the insurance carrier.

You may also only get a general surgeon, not a plastic, under medicare.  I heard this, but I do not have first hand info, just something to check into.
