I am 18 days post op and I have lost 15 lbs since the day of surgery. I was averaging 1 1/2 - 2 lbs a day till Tuesday. I have not lost anything since.  My other issue is I have not had a BM since either Monday evening or Tuesday and I'm also not peeing much either. My stomach of course feels bloated and I feel a little swollen as well. Any advice on how to get things going after surgery. I was doing fine till this week. I walked around at stores last night and riding my recumbent bike too. Any advice on what over the counter meds are safe after RNY would be appreciated.

Thanks, Suzy

Congratulations!  Did your doctor's office recommend something?  People here use Miralax, Senna, but Maybe check and see what your doctor advises.  Mine prescribed a generic form of Senakot which I took several times a day until I started having regular BMs.  Also, make sure you are getting plenty of liquids in.   I know that you should not let it get so backed up... it is a painful experience.

I just posted about stalls ;)... your body will start moving again down as long as you are following the rules.  You were losing a lot of weght for a while, so I think the body just has to reset (read m post, lot of good advice there from vets and newbies alike).

It sounds like you hit the three week stall, it happened to all of us.  stick to the plan the scale will move again.

FOR the BM I use a half cap of Miralx every morning in a glass of crystal light.  You can mix it with hot or cold and there is absolutely  no taste.  it takes a couple of days to get into your system, but I go everyday with it.  now for the not peeing....call your doctor and soon.  if it backs up into your kidneys you could have major problems.

GOOD luck and congrats on the surgery

I was told to use Benefiber. It has fiber but doesn't expand. It's tasteless and sugar free.

My surgeon suggested benefiber or the generic everyday in the am and a dose of colace (a  stool softener )every bedtimeffort. My surgeon at least 4 years ago didn't like the daily use of a laxative like Mira lax. Where did you have Surgery? I'm from the Alton IL area and had surgery 4 years ago at Depaul with Dr Morales and have had amazing results.

You mentioned that you were "not peeing much either".  Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day?   Being dehydrated can slow down BMs too.

I'm with Liz. Everything else is pretty typical. But if you aren't urinating, you aren't drinking nearly enough. Not by a long shot. Double or triple what you are drinking now. If you don't, now, you will end up hospitalized.
