I feel like a newbie

With my VSG in 2013 I was out for 2 weeks. Mainly bc that was all my employer would allow. If I had more time I would have liked out be out a month. I have had so many issues with the sleeve, I don't heal well, and I am always sick. I just want to really be as recovered as possible before returning to work. I have a pretty active job with some minor lifting. Do you think requesting 6 weeks off from the doctor is unreasonable?

All surgeons are different - but it seems most of them leave it to us to decide. I don't think it's unreasonable with an active job. You probably won't be able to lift for at least 6 weeks anyways...

Ask.

If s/he says no, then "settle" for four weeks. Kind of like asking for a puppy for Christmas. When your parents say no, then you ask for an electric guitar. It worked for my brother ;-)

I used to try that on Santa. I'd ask for a pony, then say, "well if you can't bring me a real pony, you could bring me one of your old reindeer and I'll take care of him for you!"

Of course I would have preferred a pony, but a geriatric reindeer was acceptable!

I didn't even get a guitar!

Thank you-

Yes sorry I am having a revision. Due to constant vomiting, reflux, gastroparesis, and dismotility. Insurance has already approved and I am set to go for 4/20. I was preparing myself for a 6 month weight but I am happy I don't have one. I feel like the reflux and dismotility get worse daily

My Dr. aproved 6 weeks because of my activity level at work. Just make sure the Dr. is aware the f what your work expectations are.

I don't think it's unreasonable. And if you find yourself feeling great, you can always go back earlier. If you explain to your doctor why you want the extra healing time, they would probably agree to it. Can't hurt to ask!

I would have loved more time off work to heal. I ended up having to take 2.5 weeks instead of just 2, but even after returning it took 2-3 more weeks before I was able to really focus and start cranking out work again. I was just so tired and in a mental fog.

As Lanie said, many dr's will leave it up to you. I originally was planning on going back in 4 weeks but I had a few issues and the dr had no problem with me staying out another 3 weeks. He said to go back when I felt ready. I don't think 6 weeks is unreasonable. If you are good to go quicker I doubt your boss will stop you. LOL!
