Is there a list somewhere of ideas for liquids/purees/soft foods?

Liquids...

  • water, cold, warm, room temperature - sometimes your pouch only likes it one way
  • SF flavor additives... because, again, sometimes your pouch only likes it one way
  • chicken/beef bouillon
  • SF popsicles
  • I found that ordering the hot and sour soup from my local chinese place, and then straining it very well was like drinking the fountains of heaven! Same might be said about the other choices of soups... but strain very well! I think I cried the first time I ate this... no. seriously. tears of joy!

Pureed...

  • I was lucky and was able to go to very soft mushy foods, so I never actually pureed anything

Soft...

  • Hummus... oh how I loved my hummus back then
  • cottage cheese
  • triple zero yogurt (low sugar/ high protein)
  • Scrambled egg, cooked soft... some can, some cannot handle this... again with that pouch and what they like
  • deli meats are easier than other meats during this time.
  • refried beans with a little cheese sprinkled on top
  • Egg faces baked ricotta - I think that came from the Heavens as well during that time (google it, you'll find the recipe)
  • Some like ricotta sprinkled with a little cinnamon and splenda
  • black beans with a little salsa on top (and cheese)
  • CHEESE... so many cheeses (the softer ones might be better? I don't remember)

Things to avoid...

  • oatmeal/farina/cream of wheat
  • breads of any kind
  • cereals
  • mashed potatoes
  • CARBS...

Obviously that's not any official list... that's my brain working only.

Obviously your doc might have different ideas...

You left off alcohol in the "avoid" column - definitely not a liquid no matter how some people want it to be :P

Oops! Yes, but of course... I just kinda figured that was an obvious one... No alcohol, depending on your doc, for a long long long time... Sniff

That was, I'll admit, a hard one for me after a few months...

I know the WL team will give me more ideas but it helps my anxiety and impatience to start planning way ahead. For the first week after, obviously water. I bought a 10pk of bone broth packets and a jar of unflavored protein powder. I'm not sure what to mix that with and I know it will be trial and error as to what is tolerable and what is not.

can I mix the unflavored protein in the water? I absolutely hate artificial sweeteners and they also give me really bad diarrhea so I am trying to minimize them.

You can mix the unflavored protein in anything... keep in mind though, if you're putting it in something warm/hot, mix it up in regular water first so it dissolves...

protein powder in warm/hot things gets lumpy and N.A.S.T.Y.

Maybe pick up some fresh lemons/lemon juice for your water? Some do fine on plain water, other's don't.

[Edited to add that this is a list of things I've used to mix in my unflavored whey protein powder - this isn't a list of what I ate the first week. Also, while I do subscribe to a low carb diet, the items below certainly aren't outside of most WLS medical advice and even fit within many low carbohydrate menus. One horrified poster listed the protein pasta carbs for a full serving, again, not crazy high and who of us eats a full portion size of almost anything the first few months? I listed the way I've mixed unflavored protein powder with the poster's criteria of not including any artificial sweeteners.]

Mixers for unflavored whey protein:

  1. Warm chicken/beef/vegetable/bone broth
  2. Phoo broth (Thai noodle soup broth)
  3. Plain yogurt to which i added 1 tsp seedless jelly
  4. Cottage cheese
  5. Tuna/egg/chicken salad (cleared for these five days post surgery - tuna and chicken was canned only)
  6. Plain yogurt smoothie sweetened with half a banana and some blueberries
  7. Chia tea sweetened with 1/2 tsp honey
  8. Mac n Cheese made with protein pasta and that packet of fake cheese powder (only did this once but it was lovely)

Hope that helps!
