I am about 3 weeks post RNY. All is going well. Personal Question... my poop is a weird color and smells horrific. Is this a normal thing after this surgery? Just wondering if it is surgery related or something else. Thanks and sorry for the gross topic.

I was always taught unless poop is red/black or white, then anything else is likely run of the mill. But everyone's normal is different.

Re: smell- never head of any of it being pleasant... but I think those with a c-diff infection can have an exceptionally bad smell...

It could be the protein shakes..are you on those..sometimes they will give horrible smelling poop

we sometimes get posts about yellow or very light-colored poop for the first few weeks post-surgery. I've read it's often due to fat malabsorption, which makes sense. We occasionally hear about other colors as well, but yellow or lighter-than-normal seems to be the most common. It should go away after awhile.

This poop is nothing compared to the stink you spew if you ever dump and get diarrhea. That'll knock yo mama out.

I am 2 weeks post-op and have the same problem it's because of the liquid diet and having the protein shakes and then reintroducing food slowly causes the digestion to make stinky poop. The reason I know this is when I was having this problem I ask my doctor I wanted to make sure I was healthy they told me it was to be expected and will go away in time. The color is also weird and changes all the time.

Absolutely normal.

Have Poo-Pourri in your bathrooms and in your purse.

Also common is horrible flatulence. Check everything you are eating and drinking for sugar alcohols. Also check your vitamins to see if they contain sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, isomalt, or hydrogenated starch hydrolysates.

It took me a while of experimenting with different foods before I discovered the problem was the sugar alcohols in my chewable bariatric vitamins.

I was told to expect your poop to become like a grey/cement colour after surgery for a few weeks. It does go back to its regular colour in a short while.
