68 pounds is certainly heavy for a 3 year old, but I agree the height is also an important part of the equation. What part of the country are you in? Would be happy to help identify some specialists who may be able to see him and help.

All the best,

Topic: RE: Wellspring Theraputic Weightloss camp

I had to give this a response! I had RNY 9/2009. I successfully lost 115lbs, while my niece who was 12 at the time, gained and gained.

My sister invested in sending her to Wellspring for the school year. She came home 80lbs lighter, and a very confident and healthy 16 year old. She is beautiful and happy. She is most importantly HEALTHY and loving her life with exercise. She started as a summer camp attendee, but ended up having some issues in school and so my sister and husband decided to invest in sending her away to therapeutic boarding school. It was the best decision. She is so happy!

Now, her only issue is that she would like plastic surgery to take care of her breasts- which I will post a different thread on.

actually now that re-read that... 4 1/2 feet tall? 68lbs isn't overweight for 4 1/2 feet. if it's a typo and you meant 3 1/2 feet, it's still not that overweight... only by 2 bmi points or so. I wouldn't be too concerned unless he continues gaining, while staying at the same height. (:

This was my problem... Has he been tested for Insulin Resistance?

I'm 17... I had WLS (Vsg) a year and a half ago. I've struggled with Insulin Resistance since i was 3 years old... It was determined it was entirely genetic, because the way my diet and activity level was, it just didn't make sense that i brought it upon myself.

If he doesn't, maybe see a dietitian? Ask them what you can do.

Could he be starting another growth spurt? That could cause the hunger.

I know my parents had to put locks on the cubbords so I wouldn't get into them as a kid because i was always hungry because of the high insulin levels.

I know juices were cut out, only skim milk (nothing higher than that, no 1%, 2%, whole, etc..) wheat instead of white bread, etc.. You just have to plan out meals and serving sizes.. Let him have as much of the fruits/vegetables as he wants. But other things you'd need to limit.

(just speaking from what dietitians had my parents do for me.. had they not done it I'd probably be a hell of a lot worse off now, than i am.)

If your doctor can't figure it out and he continues to gain weight, get a referral to an endocrinologist. No one figured out what was wrong with me until i was 7 or 8 years old, by which point i was already extremely overweight despite all the pre-cautions everyone took and my pediatritain constantly saying i was fine.

I really hope you figure out what's going on. It may be nothing, but on the small chance there is something metabolicly going on, you don't want to miss it. xx

My son is 3 1/2 and has been OFF the scale for height since he was 1 1/2... But was a string bean until a couple yrs ago n he started plumping up. Hes now just about 4 1/2 feet tall but weighs so much! I feel so bad cutting him out of everything he wants but hell even eat huge amounts of steamed veggies. Does anyone have exp/advice? I dont want a lifetime of fatness for him like me. I just dont know what to do. His Dr has tested everything.. N hes fine.. We just cant figure it out

I don't know how close the hospital is to you, but it may be worth it.
