I love that show! It is perhaps one of my all time favorites! I did costumes for it at one theatre and props at another!

Howdy! Fellow actor/etc here! I used to teach theatre, but now I just coach forensics and I LOVE it! I hated teaching theatre. More divas that in the backstage world! I just teach English now You know, the acting parts would be sooooo vast if I were more of an engenue , rather than a Big Mamma/character actor. I am new here too, about three weeks now. My biggest fear is people commenting on my shrinking butt. When fat people lose weight, it seems perfectly acceptable to discuss it with them, ever notice? I lost weight once and had so many people tell me how proud they were of me. I could smack someone for that! Isn't there something else to be proud of? GLengarry Glen Ross? I never found a love for Mamet

I was in your position this past fall. My surgery was July 28th and I auditioned for "Man of La Mancha" in mid-August. The show was being produced the last two weeks in October. I was straight with the director, who happened to be a friend who had directed me before. The part I really wanted was Sancho, and I told the director before auditions that I was going to be a little limited physically. Sancho isn't a hugely physical role, but there was no way I could be thrown to the ground, etc. in the fight scene. He said he would keep that in mind, but that I should audition anyway. Long story short, I got the part. The director made a few minor alterations, small enough that the audience never noticed. I was very careful of what I was eating before rehearsals, and I was a little nauseous and just a little light-headed at a few of them, but no major problems. I also made sure the costumer was aware when she came around for measurements that I would probably be somewhat smaller by the time the show opened. I would encourage you to go for it. I'm certainly glad I did. While it's true you will look a little different by showtime, most parts aren't all that locked in to a particular look anyway. Good luck, and let me know how it comes out! I had no idea that I would find other entertainers with their own message board!!!!! I just joined about a week ago and my surgery is still months away....In fact I just chose my doctor........BUT I have been buzzing around the website learning and trying to understand so much information!!! It is wonderful to find all of you. oh I am a voice-over/commercial actress out of Seattle. I also do live theatre just about anywhere I can get to in the area. I chose VOICE/OVER for my profession because of my size.....I have great voice but no one has to see me........WELL THAT IS GOING TO CHANGE.....and I am so excited about it. S0..lets get to know each other a llittle...anyone doing a show? I just got thru directing "GlenGarry Glen Ross" had one of my lead actors ave a heart attack 4 days from opening.........BUT We opened on time.....what a week!!!!! Well I hope you are all healthy and well. I am a real newbe and have many questions. One that is really bothering me....how did your surgery and weight loss effect your friendships and family relationships. AND you know how in community theatre how gossip just flies so quickly...did that happen to anyone? Well it is late here in Poulsbo Wa and must get ready for tomorrow. Rehearsing 54 kids in a Youth production of "Lewis and CLark" all morning! BREAK-A-LEG, Linda Poulsbo

Do you know when they start rehearsals? I wouldn't think they would start much before April. I would think you would be fine. I think that the biggest concern is that you will look completely different. As a director, I cast people based on what they look like at auditions and you will look TOTALLY different. Maybe you should just wait to audition for anything until post op. But whatever you decide - BREAK A LEG

I'm having my surgery 1/25/05. There is a show I would like to audition for that goes up in May, assuming that is plenty of time. The auditions are next week. How do I explain my situation without losing the opportunity to get a role? Amy

Hey, this past year, I broke the mold! After losing almost 100 pounds, I was cast as Sally in "Snoopy! The Musical". Oldest person in the cast playing the youngest. I was even hoofin' and singin'!! Couldn't have done that a year or so ago. Granted I still looked tubby, but I no longer look out of the ordinary. I am determined to learn to tap-dance now. The only costume part we did special for me was allowing me to wear capris instead of shorts. Hey, I am down to an XL in tops, as opposed to 4Xs of last year. It's nice to be able to wear normal sizes again.

I have been really lucky with the parts I have been able to play. I "play" with a dinner theater in Missouri and the owner casts all the shows. He NEVER holds my weight against me. Actually, now I am playing Gwendolyn in "The Odd Couple". Not exactly written for a woman 100 pounds overweight, the part is a lot of fun to play. I am having this surgery (besides for the health reasons) to feel better on stage. I know that I will still be able to act without losing the weight, but I can't wait to be skinny so I don't have to constantly be obsessing about how I look in the costumes on stage!

I was so excited to read your post. I didn't even know there was a theater message board until just now. Anyway, I am currently doing "The Odd Couple" at a small dinner theater in Missouri. This is my 6th show at the dinner theater and I could totally relate to your comment "that little niggling worry about my size clouding character choices..." not to mention the worry that when I sit on the couch, my dress won't be long enough to cover my legs! I am having surgery on Dec 13th, two days after the end of my show. I CAN'T WAIT!! I am really looking forward to doing a show without all of the extra weight. I can't wait for people to be able to see the character and not the fat girl who is playing her!

I LOVED performing But stopped doing theater after the Community "director" told me I had the "chops" and the voice for leads but would never get anything but chorus on his stage until I dropped 100 pounds and wouldn't I rather work backstage anyway. So, I haven't done a play in 10 years and depression has set in (Can your soul actually die from lack of greesepaint?) I hope that by coming to Obesityhelp I am taking the first step to a new life and maybe the role of Guinevere, Eliza or Maria.
