Bougie size is almost totally immaterial, and it would be a waste of time for people to put it into the signature lines, etc.  Whether or not your staple line is oversewn is also immaterial.

What MATTERS is how well the person complys with their program.   How well they stick to their prescribed diet and exercise program.

The difference in size between the biggest and smallest bougies sizes commonly used is less than one ounce in capacity, so how could this possibly make any real difference?

Far too many people try to compare something that means nothing.  It is like a bunch of little boys, going behind the barn to compare the size of their "winkies".

I don't know about others, but with my 50f bougie I can eat A LOT more than most...maybe even triple.  Sadly, 6oz of chicken breast doesn't even begin to fill me up.  As most people can eat only 2 or 3 oz, my sleeve is obviously MUCH bigger.  I would assume it must be longer as well.  I've spent a total of about 15 minutes with my surgeon before AND after surgery, so I didn't ask.  I will at my next appt. in Feb.  Actually, I'm going to request my medical report. (as I wrote above, there was no medical reason for the 50f, he said that size doesn't make much of a difference and it's safer)

Now...I rarely eat more than 3-4oz of dense protein at a time, but I have to add a cup of green veggies to be satisfied.

I'm 2 months out and down 44lbs...so obviously I'm not taking advantage of my capacity, however it's really, really difficult. More difficult than the people who are stuffed at 3oz...they have no choice but to stop eating...I could still eat quite a bit more.

Am I complaining?  Maybe a little...however I responded to you to show that there can be a huge difference in sleeve size.  Of course everyone needs to comply with their program to be successful, however like I said, that's much easier when you can only eat 3oz tops.

I tend to agree Medic.  I noticed early out the people that had their DS around the same time as me with smaller bougie could eat much less.  At about 6 months or so we evened out and could eat pretty much the same amounts.

Hi LaShelle,

The sleeve technique for the DS and the VSG is different. With the DS, part of the stretchy part of the stomach is left in on purpose, so the sleeve will be able to stretch to eventually accommodate enough protein and fat. With the VSG, the stretchy part is removed, so that the remaining sleeve capacity cannot grow as much.

I met pre-op with Dr. Rabkin (a very experienced DS surgeon) and he says the different techniques for the DS sleeve and the VSG sleeve are important. The boogie size does not tell all, it also has to do with how tightly the surgeon sews next to the boogie and how it is positioned relative to the pylorus.

You will notice many sleeve patients can only tolerate 3-4 ounces of meat and do not stretch over the years. That would be practically malpractice to give that type of sleeve to a DS patient. DS patients need more protein and fat or they will be malnourished, they need the calories.

An experienced DS surgeon could probably explain this better. Your DS sleeves are not stretching because of bad medical technique, they are doing what they are supposed to do.

I hope that helps!

Jen

No, it is not immaterial.

They used to make much larger bougies and regain was quite significant and that is why they started using smaller bougies and regain is much less.

Please stop giving your opinions as though they are fact and we are still waiting for you to back up the last bit of nonsense you wrote and then stomped out of here in a huff to avoid doing so.

I blocked this vile person (oldmedic).  I thought that would mean he could not post on my subjects.  But instead, you guys see his post, and I don't.  However, since you quoted him, I see the dribble he spewed out.  He is what forums call a troll.

He would not be able to see your thread if he just pulled up the forum.  But he can go to "recent posts" and see what others have written and respond to them.  He likely has no idea you are the one that even started the thread.

I don't block him because his misinformation needs to be corrected or someone might actually believe it.

He's so stubborn and unable to admit an error.  I'm kinda glad he came back here after making his silly "I'm leaving" post.  He's in maintenance now.  Maintenance is a lot harder that a newbie losing. We'll see how well he does as time progresses but even if he gained back 200% of what he's lost (and I do NOT hope he does) i doubt he would ever admit it.  He would still crawl down the throats of newbies bashing them for eating a cookie.

Oh OK....I was wondering how the block function works.  Yep, he is a bonafide troll.  All NOOB's need a warning about him.  Let's put it in a sticky.....LOL  Thank you for explaining.

I have never heard of anyone else having this size, but I SWEAR my surgeon said he used a 28 french bougie. Maybe he said 38 and I was just whacked out from the pain meds. Who knows?!? I know they make them that small though because someone on here posted a PDF list and 28 was clearly on there. I have what I consider to be VERY god restriction. What I want to know is how you gals measure your food in ounces. Do you have some sort of measuring cup, or do you weigh it? I just eat what I want until I'm full...but I'd kinda like to know how many ounces it is now that it's been brought up.

I use a scale from Target.  I love it!  It's the same one that Brandilynn uses.  I copied her.  It was money well spent.  Weighing my intake has been an eye opener.  I want to copy Frisko and eat the set amount of food at every meal so that I do not stretch my tummy.  That is what he does, he still eats exactly how much he did at one month out.  So that he keeps his sleeve intact without stretching it.  He's at goal and more than a year out and still weighs his food and sticks to his capacity.  It's a good idea.  Here's the scale that I have (and so does Branilynn).
