water pushing food through? What does it mean?

I hear all the time that the reason we have to wait 30 minutes before or after a meal to drink because otherwise it pushes the food through.  Does that mean our bodies don't absorb everthing or absorb more?  I am trying to be really good, but sometimes I forget and drink before my 30 minutes are up.

We dont stay full as long.

OH YES we ABSORB IT ALL.  Some folks think they are cheating the system, but that's not happening, you just get hungry faster.

And might find your meal kicked back up in your mouth too.  Mmm.  Delish.

Per my dietician:

Think of the sleeve as, well, a sleeve - with a narrow opening at the bottom.  You layer your food - protein first because it's dense and will create a plug that will hold everything that comes after it longer - then your veggies/fruit, then (if you have room) your carbs/starches.  Water will unplug the plug making it all go through faster and you'll feel hungry sooner.

I've started waiting 45-60 minutes to drink because I really do feel full longer if I stay away from the liquids.  And my drinking is about back to normal so I can get in my liquids between meals without a problem.  But it IS hard!  All my life, and probably yours too, I was told to wash my food down with whatever liquid was on the table.  It's a habit that very hard to break.

Thank you!  That all makes sense now. I will do my best to keep my drinks on hold longer.  It is a hard habit to break especially since you get thirsty when you eat!

Great answers. another reason is you know how liquids go right thr ur sleeve, empty out and are absorbed very quickly? Putting liquid in with food makes it turn into"soup" more quickly which lets it leave the sleeve quicker leaving us hungry, unsatiated and possibly needing to eat sooner.

I find popping a breath mint after meals helps me wait out an appropriate time to drink and helps relieve that feeling that whatever you ate is *still* in your mouth.

that's a great idea! I'm going to try that. I have a hard time waiting the full 45 minutes also.

My doc told me to wait 1-1 1/2 hours after eating to drink anything. It really gets hard. I try for at least 45 min. and sometimes make it longer if I get busy. It does make a difference though.

Another reason is drinking while eating (what they also say is a no, no)  allows one to eat faster and more. (lubrication for the food!  Think about  before......I always ate W/ a big glass of (whatever)  during meals to facilitate ease of consumption!
