Dr Oz and the lapband show today, anyone see it?
I had 2 bands before I got my revision to VSG. I spent 4 years going thru major issues with the band. I dvr'd the show and jus****ched it and it seemed like Dr. Oz was just doing an infomercial for the band. It was like they were just trying to ignore the woman who talked about the compiications. Everythng she said was true. I dont even know why they had her on there, no one was listening to her anyway. The one doctor said he had done 2000 bands and had never had one erosion and I thought he said only 1% of people have slips and they were easy to fix which is a total lie. He said its an easy surgery to remove the band if it doesnt work for you. He didnt bother to mention the damage and scar tissue the band can leave. The amounts of food the 2 women were showing they eat in a day, was so unreal. I guess thats all they could eat or they would be throwing up constantly. Unfortunately, Im sure there will be a lot of people who watched that show, who will be convinced the band is right for them.
I know what you mean, i was really disapointed in him. I have always really liked him but couldn't believe the show today. So one sided, he didn't do any research or they would have spent the whole show on the subject and could have gotten some people on there like you that know the truth. I believe people should get the whole truth, not just some surgeon who is making a killing on the band and all the fill/unfills and complications. I'm thinking of writing him a letter to tell him how i lost a lot of respect for hm today. And you're right, i bet a lot of people will see this as an answer to their problems and live to regret it :o(
i agree that it was nothing more than an infomercial for the band, and i wrote a note on the dr. oz website saying so. the band manufacturers lobbied the FDA for the lowered standards so they could sell more bands - it was about making them more money and nothing more...... this will double the eligibility pool and make them a fortune.....
stupid move, if'n you ask me....
and yes, i told him he should do a show about the sleeve.....

Makes me sick hearing / reading this of these so called respected physicians using a powerful medium as their infomercial, or if I do give them the benefit of the doubt - without doing adequate research about a topic they are talking about.
I would have respected Dr. Oz if he had talked of all 3 types of major surgeries and the pros and cons but as someone said he probably part of their huge PR push. I was in LA last week and there was even an ad on the radio on how the lap band was the easiest way to loose weight. I think this is a major PR / sales push.
As for Dr. Oz - lost all respect for him.

The reason they did not do the sleeve (IMHO) is because there is no product to sell like the band for Dr Oz to do a infomercial on and get paid big bucks for the promo from the manufacturers of the band!!! Dr. Game show host and product pusher extraordinaire is doing quite well for himself! I use to love him.....but please.....every show has people running to the store to buy some product or vitamin!
"They also didn't mention that all the fills/unfills are not covered by your insurance."
Most insurances will cover this if they cover the band. Some don't though. It's something to check out.
"His experts even said that the "success" rate of the band is only 17-20% of a person's excess weight at two+ years. "
That's not what the studies show. The band is the least effective but average EWL over a 5 year period is generally more like 40%.
Also, they've lowered the BMI requirements to a BMI of 30 if you have comorbidities, like diabetes. This is what the limit is in the rest of the world for all the WLS types is, btw. But that's not 30 pounds to lose, it's 50.
Sounds like a typical doctor's show where they cover the topic superficially and have as much misinformation as information!

I agree he was probably paid big bucks by the band manufacturers to do that show. The know in a few years when the sleeve starts being covered by insurance companies, they are out of business, so they need to make all the money selling the crapband now. I cant believe there hasnt been a class action lawsuit yet from all the band complications.
a couple of months ago i emailed the dr. oz show and told them they needed to do a segment on wls as for many people its the only workable option. well geez, they picked the band which is fine in some cases but there are other options and we know which is best. But regardless of our bias, they should have covered all wls.
we should all email the dr oz show and tell them how incomplete their information was. maybe if they get a bunch they will listen. i think i just googled dr. oz to find the web site to email.
